Boxee box

I just picked one up on the weekend, I was tried of dealing with the somewhat loud PC in the living room (it wasn't unbearable, but once you go to something completely silent like the BB you never want to go back).

Awesome little thing!

I wanted something that will allow me to play my 1080p files, and still keep some functionality and it does just that but much, much more as I later found out (streaming movies from repositories (cams, dvd rips, etc, etc).

Anyone else running one?

I'm thinking of getting one, but i currently have a WDTV Live, not sure if I want to spend $200 for all the added features, the menu and UI is much better than the WD.

If i get one, then ill have to move the WDTV to my bedroom, but then I'll need NAS to share across both, then i may as well by a player for the kitchen........it gets expensive :)

^^^ lol... i hear ya..

I did a little research before buying it (WDTV vs. BB), and the BB was just that much better.

I don't have your problem since I have a dedicated WHS box which stores everything, so any PC is able to access the media over the network.

For those that have quiet PC's XMBC will do a phenomenal job, not including the streaming.

My co-workers is huge on BB, he says it's really amazing.

^^ Yea it is based on XBMC as far as I have read...

As an all in one, plug and play package it cannot be beat for the price IMO.

i run an eeebox with xbmc...get the function of a pc and a mutlimedia centre and renders 1080p .mkv files.

I just put whatever I wanna watch on a USB and plug it into my PS3. Works no problem for me. lol

NOTORIOUS VR 12-20-2010 02:41 PM

^^^ Try playing .mkv's :P

That said, I'm thinking of purchasing a US VPN account so I can have all the "good stuff" that is blocked for us Canadians. Seems like for $10-15/mo you get a VPN with no cap's, etc... Anyone else doing that as well?

Just waiting for BB to get their Netflix stuff up and running an Hulu plus.. woot!

i got the patriot home theatre box thats been on sale for a while now.. plays most of my 1080p files.

One of my bluray players, reads MKV hd, 1080P divx files, ( and pretty much anything else I've thrown at it so far) over wifi; or accepts large usb hard drives up to 750gb so far, netflix, youtube, etc, bluray discs, up converting dvd's... pretty happy for the theatre room.

Thought about the BB or WDTV, but no use for it now, since the player covers all of my needs.

you have to run a server to transcode them first though.... It won't play them direct.

If for some reason I actually have a BR-disc that I need to play, I use the PS3 as well.. but 90% of my media is on my server ;)

For you guys with a Boxee Box or anyone running XMBC, you should pic up a Kinect.

Check this out.
