Where to get insurance?
 

My friends insurance got cancelled due to 6 points demerit and $1500 insurance claim.

Anyone knows where to get insurance? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently got my insurance cancelled.

The only place would be Powell Insurance brokers http://www.powellinsurance.ca/ who deal with high risk clients. Tell your buddy not to bother with the regular insurance companies. They won't touch him.

By the way, how long does it take to expunge the demerit points from the system?

3 years from the conviction date it is off your record. Demerit points mean nothing to insurance. It's about the number of convictions. 2 minor convictions with an "at fault" accident is a common "filed rule for non-renewal".

For the record, every broker in Ontario has at least 1 high risk market. Typically, because the commission is lower, they will try to point you elsewhere.

Slightly off topic sorry OP, is it possible to cancel all health accident coverage from a policy? I have this coverage through life insurance and my works health insurance.

My policy says 500$ a year for this, which I think is bullshit.

The accident benefits are mandatory. They will extend to cover any occupant of your vehicle (unlike your life/work benefits package). So there is still value in having them. You are not allowed to decline/exclude them.

I have a perfect driving record, and no claims ever. I know of people paying 500 - 700$ per year and I'm just wondering how that is possible.

I wonder how much financing fees are for paying monthly. If you pay the year all at once maybe it's a few hundred cheaper.

Industry standard is 3% fee. Many companies waive that fee if you have home & auto together.

That kind of premium is possible but getting less common. Usually that would come on older cars and they would have to be getting many discounts like mutli-vehicle, multi-policy, age, retiree, etc...
