E90 reliability question...

Hey guys,

Currently I drive an E46 (330) and have had it since 60km, now it has 150 km...I am looking into purchasing an E90 330...

Any thoughts on reliability what to look for? Any known problems? I am assuming the usual BMW maintenance...

Thoughts please...advice...I do hate the run flats though...*th-up*

I'm an E46 owner (for the past 3yrs)... gone through 3 of them (328i, 330i, M3) and considering an E92 M3 in a year or two. I've been asking your question to many techs/mechanics regarding the E9x BMW's. Apparently BMW has really taken a turn for the worse regarding general reliability. I was told to stay away from them with a 10' pole! Despite the bad reviews, i'm still considering the M3 because I always wanted BMW to drop a V8 in their M3 line-up. I'd recommend getting a certified pre-owned car and consider extended warranty. Good luck with your decision. Any E9x owners around to confirm this??

Hi Empowered,

Funny you should say that...I have heard the exact same thing...I have also had close friends have loads of problems with their BRAND NEW purchased 335s, which cost large money...I was even thinking of grabbing another E46...I think that all bimmers have a love/hate relationship associated with owning them...if I don't purchase another E46 or E90, I am going to go with an Audi...

^I've heard horror stories with the 335s yes... but not the 330s

This is the first time I'm hearing it as a general statement about E9x.

Randy,

the tech you met at my house told me that the e9x cars are very reliable - so much so that he even told me not to buy an extended warranty once mine expires. I've also heard from others including some service advisors that there is lots to go wrong, so am not sure who is correct. But our car has been fine and it gets driven 600 km a week.

No issues on the '07 335 (yet, lol). I would think the NA motor equipped cars to be rather robust, not to mention that the 330i supposedly has one of the best NA engines out of the BMW lineup since the E46 M3. Check up over on www.e90post.com

If you're really worried about the reliability, get a BMW certified car.

I did and even though I'm still on the original warranty, I couldn't be any happier knowing that I don't have to sell my liver in the future.

From what i've been reading it seems like the e90 330 is a pretty reliable car. It's the 335 that has all the major issues with the hpfp. I've owned a e46 325 and now own a e90 330. Theyre both nice cars but imo the 330 is quite a bit nicer. Drive one for yourself and see but I wouldnt be too scared of it ... a 335 I would be.

Just make sure you check it out like you would any used cars maintence records, accidents etc ...

Check e90post theres alot of great info on there.

One thing you might want to google are "intermittent valve tick" and "squeeky brakes on acceleration" two common problems with the 330

Thanks Cheeba,

I also drive an E46 330 and love it...I was thinking of jumping into a CPO 330 or 328...

The intermittent valve ticking is only for the E90 325...a friend has been to the dealer multiple times and they won't fix it because the motor doesn't tick when he brings it in...the dealership will only fix it if they hear it...I was also thinking of a new A4

330Hi 11-14-2010 08:37 PM

I'd like to hear from someone who has owned both E9x 330i and 335i

I've heard a lot of the same things in regards to the 330 e90 being pretty reliable and the 335's being a bit of hit and miss. However, I can definitely tell you an Audi is 10 times worse. A close friend of mine is a sales rep at Agincourt Autohaus and his cousin is one of the mechanics at another dealer and off the record they are having a hell of a time with the current and previous gen a4 and a6, so much so that it is not uncommon for a customer to bring the car in for warranty service 5 or 6 times, sometimes for the same problem. My mechanic which now owns a private garage but was the shop forman at Pfaff a number of years ago, echos the same sentiment, Audi is way down in reliability keeping mechanics busy, but not so good, especially from an inconvenience point of view and resale. Audi's resale sucks, which actually means you could pick a 2-3 year old one for less than an equivalent Bimmer then spend the difference on mechanics! *uzi* :D

Actually it affects the N52 engine which is what the 330i has as well. Faulty design.
