Belts squeeked this morning
My belts squeeked for about 2-3 seconds this morning , i checked them and they were running fine? do i just need belt dressing?? any of u experts can help?

????belt dressing????

BigD 10-08-2010 10:48 AM

Not an 'expert' but I'd guess belt and/or tensioner giving up the ghost. As the weather gets colder, you'll get condensation in the morning and the rubber is harder when cold, so the situation is exacerbated. Similar to when you drive through a puddle with no splash guard, worn belts will squeak for a while.

sooooo....all in all are you telling me my belts are still okay for now?

InfiniteDice 10-08-2010 10:55 AM

Belt dressing stops the squeak but makes the surfaces of the pulley and belt sticky. Check the deflection on the belt.

Personally I'd just get new belts.

i got other things to poay for then belts....its not a huge issue they squeeked for like3 seconds...belt dressing for now?

BigD 10-08-2010 11:01 AM

Just live with it for now. Unless they're visibly damaged, it's fine, just annoying. If it does break (not likely), you won't have much time though. Your steering will be like a tractor, your engine will be running off the battery which won't last long, and you won't have any cooling.

Adrian_Lindn 10-08-2010 11:03 AM visible reccomend any name brand dressing?

Trekz 10-08-2010 06:14 PM

i cant remeber the name right now, but in my shop we use this silicone based caliper slider grease on belts and it does magic! Just goggled it its called Eze-Slide made by Kleen-Flo. Spray on belt dressings so more harm then good.

Silicone lube to silence slipping belts?! Do they use gasoline in their fire extinguishers?

If you can't afford $32.89 for a new belt you shouldn't own a BMW.

Other things to pay for like what? Those BBS reps your looking for? What good will wheels do you when your belt snaps and your car doesn't run?

sol_searchin 10-17-2010 08:42 PM

^This, if you can't afford a cheap part such as a belt you shouldn't be driving a BMW get into an economy car.

I can afford new belts i didnt realize that they are that cheap... I purchased the wheels...and sol searchin get your ass off this forum..this is for people with "BMW's" since i can afford one and you can go suck your mother....And yes I will purchase belts this week..thank you for your help...I just needed a temporary solution but buying belts is better then wasting money on dressing.
Thank You

Check deflection first, if it's loose then tighten. Adjustment procedure can be found in any manual. Checking this costs no money, chances are the belt is glazed and in the morning it slips, glazing is caused when a belt is too loose, or too old.

Do not over tighten, it is no good for the bearings or the belt.
