key turns loosely in the ignition
 

Im having abit of a problem with my ignition.

The lights are all on on the dash but when i turn the key it turns freely without any effect on the car. The steering does not lock nor does the lights turn off when i take the key out.

It wont start or turn the lights off. It happened when the car was on and when i tried turning it off, they key just turned back with no affect. I had to turn the car off manually by pulling out the fuse.

what could the problem be? Any input is appreciated.

The ignition switch cylinder is busted. Common E38 problem.

You have an E38 right? If so, browse over to www.E38.org and there is a write-up of how to fix this issue. (CTRL+F is your best friend on that site)

Sounds like the ignition switch. Thought mine was toasted a couple days ago. Luckily it wasn't.
