Possible E39 purchase, need your opininos
I might buy an E39 from a dealer, and I want your opinions:

Its a 2000 model 528i, 206,xxx kms on it.
Its dark blue, automatic.

So here:

The seller (private dealer- NOT BMW dealer) claims the previous owner somehow managed to have the garage door slammed on windshield/hood and thus deploying airbags.
The BMW dealer (Otto) has changed the whole dash (brand new) and new windshield.
I checked the car fax, it reports "collision" "damage" (not sure exactly, something along these) but no red flags about mileage fraud or car being written off.
IIRC, the previous owner did not pay the bill and the BMW dealer sold it.

This is what the guy told me, he is not sure what exactly happened or what was done.

Does a new dash change the value of the car or something?

Oh and the dealer forgot to put the VIN sticker on dash after installation, but he does have the sticker for it.

I jacked up the car today, there were no VIN numbers on all 4 doors and 2 fenders, just on trunk.
Compared to others I've seen it looks like a good deal but I wanna know what you guys think?

I need 1 ballpoint and 1 fuel gauge measure (the one in gas tank).

Carproof is more accurate than Carfax. Too many questions and too many other e39s available. I'd walk away personally.

zarbat007 01-27-2010 07:13 PM

oh i might add, this car will be about 4200 with tax and everything included

so, it is way cheaper than any other e39's available.

europrince 01-27-2010 07:15 PM

buddy, e39s aren't cheap to maintain. if you're penny pinching, you're in for a big surprise once you own it for a while. spend the extra money and get a good specimen. if you can't afford it, don't even look at an e39. get a honda. you need to pay to play with an e39.

#1: If the low purchase price is attractive, this is not the car for you. Maintenance is a bitch. Not upgrades, just keeping it running.

#2: WTF is with the sketchy history? Unless you're getting it somewhere reputable (like a dealer) I would find a different one.

I've owned 2 E36s so far, I do my own repairs, so I think I have a good idea about E39s. I've done my homework regarding common problems and issues.

That was not the original price, it was a lot more, I talked it down.

There are no check engines, bottom of the 2 front doors have bubble rust(so do almost every E39 I have seen so far), no dead pixels, leather interior is in good shape, all windows work great (no crappy regulators).

Anyways I just wanted to know what you guys think. As I said myself, he bought it from Ottos and he is not sure what exactly was done. I was told I can go to Ottos and ask them about the repair.Which I will do tomorrow.

Under the car is clean and rust free, no signs of frame damage. But there are no VIN numbers on all doors and fenders. Door jamb has the VIN though. Does the E39 even have VIN on doors?

Mine is on a sticker, like where you find tire pressures.

ecuconnection 01-27-2010 09:50 PM

My gut say's no but the price say's hello!!

zarbat007 01-27-2010 10:17 PM

This car also has the VIN number on door jamb (sticker as you said, as the pic below shows), but there are NO VIN stickers on each individual door or fenders.

Can you please tell me if your fenders and doors have each have a VIN sticker on them?
I'd really appreciate it. I tried googling but the only relating info I found was BMW didn't attach VIN stickers to all body panels after E34 and E36, not sure if its true though.

Doors don't. Forgot to check fenders.

Go get that black 540i/6 on usedottawa....mechanic owned. 18" M5's for summer. Betcha he'd take 7g. Might be more than the budget can take but so much better in so many ways.

zarbat007 01-27-2010 11:28 PM

Thanks Joe! Apperciate it :)

I'd love to have a 540i, but IMO its not the best car for me at the moment, not the V8.
I'd love a 530i although they sell for at least 10,000 (I haven't sold the E36 yet).

BTW Joe, this car is orient blue, and auto, but to my surprise, it had a decent acceleration
and "ommph" for an auto. My bro and sister love the idea of my getting this car, prolly because the can
only drive auto. :shifty:

carjoe 01-27-2010 11:36 PM

Orient Blue? Cool!

Couldn't help myself, looked under the hood and there wasn't much light but I couldn't spot any VIN's Though I'm sure I've seen one imprinted somewhere...I'll look again when there's more light.

Auto isn't so bad. I'm quite liking it. This thing has the worst cupholders so I have to drive one handed in the morning holding my coffee...

Frig, the price is very nice.

zarbat007 01-27-2010 11:44 PM

A few bimmerforums members confirmed they do not have the stickers on doors and fenders, so I'm not worried about that.

So far it needs body work and 1 ball joint, plus the fuel gauge thing.

Bimmer Heaven 01-27-2010 11:50 PM

I dont buy the "garage door" story one bit! The airbags are pretty hard to deploy, and you need front collision to do so...It will be easy to check tho, just get it looked at by a good body shop.

zarbat007 01-27-2010 11:58 PM

The bumper cover and left fenders were painted,so was rear left 1/4 panel (rust maybe?) but the hood was original.
I'll ask the BMW dealership when I get there tomorrow.
