LF: Power Steering Rack
Hi Everyone,
My power steering has never worked, so I put on a belt and filled up the reservoir today. Unfortunately, the leak seemed to be coming from the rack. I have it just about off, so I guess it's time to look for a replacement. Does anyone have one for sale? Thanks, Brent |
Try one of the forum sponsors, they usually have one kicking around.

While you are at it do an upgrade to e36 rack. *th-up*
Eurostyle Brent i got a good from him couple weeks back or simplycars maybe
Thanks, guys, got it!
did you upgrade to an E36 rack or stick with an E30 rack?
Stuck with e30, also replaced inner and (about to replace) outer tie rods as well while I was at it
ah too bad, I was hoping for another opinion on upgrading. I hate my E30 rack!
is the e36 rack a direct fit or does some mods have to be done and what is the advantage ie a better ratio? Also can you just bleed the rack and run with no power steering ?
the rack fits but you have to use spacers to make it mate to the body. you also have to shorten the steering knuckle as the output shaft housing is taller then the e30. I wouldn't recommend running a power rack dry. it's meant to hold fluid for a reason. the turn ratio with a stock e36 rack is a bit shorter then e30 but you can even go shorter with an M3 e36 rack. All depends on how you drive and what you prefer. one of guys know the spec difference between the rack. I can't recall.

thanks so It is a quicker steering, could work for me for the rallycross that I am doing. I look for the info on the how to install it. its on here somewhere I would think

There is a decent writeup on r3vlimited how to do the E36 rack swap. It is in the FAQ section.
