Victim of a hit and run in a parking garage...

I was coming from a hard days work only to find that my parked 530 has been the victim of a hit and run :(. My work's parking garage does not have any camera's, and by the time I came out of work no cars were around mine. The lowlife who did this never left any notes or anything. Here's a Flickr link http://www.flickr.com/photos/42735947@N03/. As you can see, only the moldings have sustained the paint damage but they've been bent as well. Would body shops be able to save it or would I need new door moldings?. I haven't gone to body shops for estimates yet, and not anytime soon as i'll be working almost everyday this coming week. I'll keep this updated and let u guys know how it turns out.

I don't believe the mouldings sit just right after they've been removed. They're negligible compared to the cost of fixing that door. Based on the pics there might be damage to the second door. When repainting, they'll probably blend into the second door anyways.

They might be able to pop the door out. If so, new moulding + paint, and you're done.

Yeah the driver's door has a very very slight dent to it as well. Some of us have been down this road before, so you know how it feels. Just to be clear i'm expecting this kind of repair from a body shop...
- take out old moldings (not salvageable)
- get new ones, sand and paint them
- fix dents on both doors
- put back new moldings

Too bad, such a sweet E39. That's why I can not stand west end.

The door wont be easy to pop out, you will have the pop can effect. It also looks like the dent has a crease on the top and botom.

As for the mouldings, if the plastic did not get stretched or cracked it could be reshaped with a heat gun.

Sorry about the damage.

seek and destroy

The mouldings are certainly salvageable. They may gap a bit from the door panel half way between the clips though. Perhaps Dado's idea with the heat gun works.

Here is my two cents worth. the dent looks pretty shallow; get a dent guy ( dent doctor or similar) to pull it for you. probably cost you 100.00 and I'd leave the molding on until the dent guy looks at it. He may suggest pulling it or leaving it on before he does the work. if it is only scuffs on the molding you can remove with a buff. cheers!

Doors look like an okay pull. Time for black trim and M5 bumpers?

This is why i park as far away from everyone as possible. I can't stand other drivers in toronto, miss, brampton, gta in general. Downtown street parking is the worst, never again.

The problem is our system punishes people for being honest and doing the right thing. If you leave a note and the person reports it to their insurance company it goes down as an 'at fault' accident on your record. I'm not saying this to discourage you from leaving notes, as not doing so and getting caught is charged as a "fail to remain" then you have the major conviction & accident on your record. (those 2 together is grounds for non-renewal of your policy with most companies).

I think it is a serious flaw in the insurance system. (of which there are many) The consequence for dinging a parked car should not impact your rate the same as re-ending someone.
