Get a magnaflow aftermarket one... 99$. You have an 89? isn't that exempt yet? Just gut the thing and weld it shut. LOL

I got one on a 89 325i. 100.00 - but he's right- the car should be exempt for emissions.

Its no longer a rolling 20 year rule.The cut off year is 1987 and older that are exempt. Anything newer from 1988 and up needs an e-test. Just did my 88 535IS last week and it passed.Whew! Magnaflow cats are pretty low cost but make sure you get a new O2 sensor as well to better your chances of passing an e-test.Buy new for sure!
