yep the car does have lsd. to bad i didnt have pix of the tires after. the wires sticking out were over 6 inches long

I have some Kumho's I can let you use for another if you like....lol

M5 diff?

to be honest jay i dont know. my car is the m-packedge one so i would believe so.

If you didn't put it in, and the previous owner didn't put it in, then you don't have one. The M5 is the only e39 that came with an LSD from the factory.

I recently went to the dealer to try and find out what fluid I can put in my diff, ATF or gear oil and after I gave them my VIN, they told me that my car, a 2003 540i had a LSD from the factory.

Surely the dealer can't be wrong????????......lol

Please explain your information....though I have read that only the M5 e39 came with a LSD....please dont let me go back to Downtown BMW and tell them they are wrong!!!!

Unfortunately you'll have to go down to 'downtown bmw' and tell them they're wrong.:)

Take a quick look on real oem, the only diff offered for the 6 speed 540i is the same one offered on every year of 540, an open diff 2.81:1 ratio
PN: 33 10 1 428 576

Automatics had as an option a shorter final drive.Still an open diff at a 3.15:1 ratio
PN: 33 10 1 428 572

M5's were a limited slip 3.15:1
PN: 33 10 2 229 566

Go and ask the dealership that told you that you have an LSD what the part number is, because I'd love to know, cuz I'll install it in my car:D

Unfortunately you can't tell from that. my 540 leaves 2 strips as well, along with many other e39's. And I know for a fact mine is an open diff.

Any properly setup open diff with good suspension and equal traction to both wheels will spin both wheels.

im curiouse at what an open diff is.
and what is my benefit if i get the m5 diff?
