E39 528i - climate control fan gone haywire!!!!

Happy spring all....

My '98 E39 528 seems to have an issue with the controller for the climate fan. It sometimes rapidly changes speeds. It sometimes will only blow on Max and sometimes won’t blow at all. It will even sometimes increase from min to max on its own.

Does anybody know what part controls the fan speed and where it would be located on my ride....

Suggestions of whether this would be a good DIY project?

If it is only the Fan speed that is acting up chances are that your FSU is on its way out... for sure this is a DIY use these instructions:

PS. Do it before it drains your battery and leave you stranded some where.

my friend had his whole car die in downtown Calgary when his 97 540's battery died because of the FSU malfunction

Thanks All.... I'm going to pick one up this week and see if that solves the problem. Seems like it is a common problem with the E39. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Worked like a Charm.... an easy fix though getting into position under the dash was a bit of a challenge. Thanks for the great info
