1-Series.... winner or loser?

I was in a BMW dealership recently mulling the 1 Series. Initially, I thought it was hideous... but lately it's grown on me. My worry is this... 4 years from now will the 1 series be the E36 3-Series ti of the lineup? Will it be the hideous, mutant, black sheep styling mistake of the BMW lineup that people shake their heads at and ask... who the hell would buy that?

Or is this car a winner that will end up with a proper niche following like the mini cooper and end up holding its value well?

I'm actually surprised there are not more on the road. The 135 is a fast little car. I guess the price is a turnoff for most. They have potential, too bad there is no hatch version here.

I really like them and think they are great vehicles, but for the price of a new one I'd rather get something a little nicer that's CPO (e46 ZHP, e92 328i? etc)

The only downside is the price. Imo

BTW, remember what the other black sheep was?

The ugly duckling. Oh yes, I love it. The MANS Z3. :)

I don't think it's hideous, I think it's the only other acceptable looking car in the current BMW lineup after the 3 series COUPE, especially with some eyebrows so that it doesn't look like a cringing, bug eyed 8 year old taking a cock in the ass for the first time. But I still think it's a fail. It's significantly smaller than a 3 and not significantly lighter (90 lbs officially). It has E30 pretentions but it's not an E30. Just get a 3.

no, i think it will be the next "e36". Once the price goes down of course.

it reminds me of the e36 in a strange boxy way

I was able to test drive a 135i, and I thought it was great! It made me think of my E36 with a twin turbo 3.0 in it, which is a fabulous idea. Interior seems to have the same amount of room as an E36, just probably a smaller trunk. If I could afford to trade in my E36 for a 135i, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Personally i Love the car, it looks great, the 135 performs amazingly, but the biggest downfall to me is the size, i dont fit in the thing. being 6ft4 really does hurt the comfort level..

I love it and would own a 135i Sport, and only a 135i.

I'm of the "buy a real bmw you cheap ass" camp

I think for the small price difference, the 3 is much more car. The 135 looks decent from a couple angles, but all in all, it's stumpy.

As though having the M3 marginally better than the 335i wasn't foolish enough here is another reason to show how BMW is walking down Phail drive. I suppose the 1 series was an attempt at (re)opening up another class. But I don't think it's quite panned out that way. Too expensive and not enough interior space but most importantly, ugly as hell.

I think its a great little car withs loads of power and potential for more power.
The only dwn size is the rear seats is very cramped.
Charlie has a great example of the 135.

IMO, BMW has failed on many fronts with the 1 series. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great car, but when making a decision to purchase one, you have to look at all of the options. That is where it's weaknesses shine through. Not light enough to make a decent difference between the 3 series and the 1 series. Too expensive for what it gives you. Very obvious cost cutting measures, ie stamped steel lower control arms instead of the alum. ones the 3 has (one of the causes of the weight problems as well). And most of all, for someone like me with a family, that wants a little enthusiast in my family vehicle, the only models they brought were the ones that I wouldn't touch two doors. Where's the wagon?? Wheres the 4 door??? Where's the diesel??? I'd buy a 3 series in a heart beat over one of these. I still think they have they're niche market, but that's all it is...........a niche.

good car, but it could of been made a bit different. i think more of a e30/boxy look should of been put toward it.
