Pretty sure my car will be written off:(

So last Thursday I was driving home and all of a sudden blowing snow created a complete white out condition. Couldn't see 1 foot in front of me. Slowed down but then a car just appeared through the snow. Not enough time to react so collision was unavoidable. From what I understand the girl was trying to get into her driveway and got stuck. So she was basically 90 degrees to the street and completely blocking the lane. Luckily no one was hurt.
My car was literally a needle in a haystack. 2001 530i with M package, absolute mint condition and only 108000 kms. I also just did a bunch of maintenance on it (cooling system overhaul, ccv, new pads and rotors, new battery, cps, spark plugs, fuel filter, ignition switch, etc). I am so bummed.
I'd love to find another e39 but they are getting more scarce...especially in the condition mine was in. Any sources that I can check aside from autotrader and kijiji? Anyone buy their car from the states? Any good sources to recommend?

Blackedout95 03-02-2014 11:39 AM

I can tell you that we would get in excess of $10k-$11k+++ here for a mint e39 with only 108000k all day long. How much more would depend on any maint. needed.

Sorry to hear the story, fight hard for a fair payout!

Bimmer Heaven 03-02-2014 12:00 PM

How hard is the hit!? Anything is fixable, and can be done right. If you love the car, try to get it fixed! E39 parts are not hard to find these days...

Here are some pics. The rear got hot as well.

mech9T8 03-02-2014 12:46 PM

Driver side airbag went off too

dbworld4k 03-02-2014 01:04 PM

Ouchhhhh. That's really unfortunate man. If they do write it off, fight tooth and nail. Make it a point that to replace that car with an identical once isn't the same as another 01 530i on auto trader. Receipts for your recent work may help, too. They will throw many low balls at you. You just need to prove the opposite.

Bimmer Heaven 03-02-2014 02:39 PM

Yes, to insurance this will be written off, easy $15K repair...But should be doable for about half if you know what to do!

mech9T8 03-03-2014 01:21 PM

Saw a nice 540i in the states....hmmmm.

OP - we need to get together and have a drink...cry on each other's shoulder...

Saturday night, I was driving home in the snow. A Camry was in the left turn lane signalling left. The driver changed her mind as I was passing and turned into my path. She blocked all lanes with her Camry perpendicular to the road and was trying to drive into the driveway of a gas station. I was honking the horn and flashing my lights. I aimed for the gap in front of her car and the curb hoping the driver would see me and stop in time. When I realized it wasn't going to stop, I tried to clear the back of the Camry, but it was too slippery and I didn't make it.

The Camry spun 180 degrees. Fortunately I wasn't going very fast and nobody was injured. The driver's husband was in the gas station and walked over. The driver told the cops that she was talking with her husband.... you mean on the phone since he wasn't in the car?

I think she was trying hard not to incriminate herself and the cops were getting annoyed. They charged her with something and was giving her a hard time about some child seat that was missing CSA stickers? I hope her insurance is so expensive that they can't afford to drive. That would help keep incompetence off the road.

Anyway, the Touring is not looking very happy and I'm also concerned the insurance might want to write it off. Fortunately the damage is not as bad as yours...wish me luck!

mech9T8 03-04-2014 01:12 PM

I think when a BMW gets hurt we all hurt.
Yours doesn't look too bad. Don't think it will be a write off.

windwagen 03-04-2014 08:12 PM

Fawk.... They wrote it off, but I could buy it back.

Anyone interested? Anyone have a Msport front end they want to sell me? Eurostyle?

It's totally drive able and still drives awesome. No structural damage. Damage to hood, fender, headlight and of course the bumper cover. I'm going to the garage to see if they popped the hood open.

mech9T8 03-04-2014 09:36 PM

Wow. I'm surprised they wrote it off.

mech9T8 03-04-2014 09:37 PM

How much did they offer you?

windwagen 03-04-2014 10:02 PM

Just under $5,000.00 which is actually pretty fair. I just have a hard time letting it go because I know it has a lot of mileage left in it.

shanehutton 03-05-2014 09:52 AM

How much are they willing to sell it back to you for?
Send me a PM.

I'm not impressed with the insurance/appraisal system. I went to the shop today to have a closer look at the car. I ripped off what's left of the bumper and removed the smashed headlamp. What I found underneath - nothing.... looks fine! And they were going to write this off?

Bumper shock took a hit ...and actually bounced back! Some movement for the rad support but the rebar looks perfect and I can't see any bends except for hood and fender.

Unicorn will live to run again!!!!

Sorry shanehutton, thanks for asking.

mech9T8 03-06-2014 01:04 PM

I'm surprised your insurance company got back to you so quickly.
It's been 2 days and I have not heard the final verdict on my car.
Just waiting for the low ball offer.

windwagen 03-06-2014 02:09 PM

Maybe if they spent more time looking at it they wouldnt have been so quick to write off.

mech9T8 03-06-2014 04:43 PM

The verdict isn’t in yet but I just had a crazy idea. I could buy back my car, find a donor car and swap engine, transmission, etc. From what I remember the engine looked untouched from the front impact. Hmmm…

windwagen 03-06-2014 11:29 PM

Well.... See what they offer you if you keep the car. I'm not sure which is more work... Engine swap or just fixing your car.

Take closer look at it and take inventory on what you need. See if it is fixable at all. I can tell you from my brief search for a silver fender an hood, there are lots of E39 used parts available in the Toronto area.

Used M-tec bumper is a challenge, but I think you already know where to find those.

Rusty the unicorn is up and running again. Rear Oem Msport bumper is not here yet so I just installed the original bumper cover. It'll take 10 days plus painting so I'm just going to drive around as is for now.

Fender is in excellent condition but I should have taken a closer look at the hood. It's got numerous little hail dents so I'll have to get it painted with the bumpers. Paint match is about 95% including the fender so I'll paint that too.

The busted hood was really bent. If I closed the hood, the replacement headlamp would have been crushed!

mech9T8 03-10-2014 12:04 PM

Looking better already

windwagen 03-10-2014 07:09 PM

Here's a bonus, the previous owner of the hood did a great job aiming the washer jets....

Any news on your car?

mech9T8 03-10-2014 09:42 PM

Haven't heard from my insurance company in a week. Maybe there's a back log for the adjusters to work through. I'm in no rush. It just gives me more time to look for another car. Hard to find a good e39.

windwagen 03-10-2014 10:03 PM

Maybe you can upgrade to M5? E60??

mech9T8 03-10-2014 11:06 PM

Really want an e39. May start looking in the states.

windwagen 03-11-2014 08:19 AM

I saw some on kijiji and autotrader while I was looking for my hood and fender... Did you see the thread for the cheap M5? It's very flaky....

mech9T8 03-11-2014 12:06 PM

Searched kijiji and autotrader but no success yet.

mech9T8 03-12-2014 08:04 PM

And it's auto...I need a manual.

windwagen 03-12-2014 10:39 PM

Oh man... You should score this....

Same as the first kijiji post

Pretty sure my car will be written off:(

Rust and a busted transmission is hardly a score.

windwagen 03-13-2014 03:03 AM

Some compound + Redline MT-90!!!

windwagen 03-13-2014 10:57 AM

Hey - I almost had a repeat yesterday. I was driving the wounded touring out of the parking lot at Longo's. At the driveway, I'm stopped to turn right onto the street. I see a C class coming from my left - signalling to turn into the driveway. Knowing that it's super slippery, I decide to wait instead of pulling out in front of it, but also aware that it might understeer and plough right into the unicorn.

Sure enough, driver can't slow down and decided to bail on the turn - goes straight.... then stops. I have to give her credit for not crashing into me, but instead she pulls over to make a U turn. I would think this would be an unsafe place to stop considering what just happened.

mech9T8 03-14-2014 12:25 PM

So the verdict is in. Car can't be repaired. They offered $8800 (taxes in). I said no of course...let the negotiations begin!
I asked about buying back the car and they it's possible but because it has structural damage I would need to find someone with a special license? Anyone know anything about this?

mech9T8 03-14-2014 12:39 PM

Just called Phil at Eurostyle...apparently there is no special license. Thanks Phil!
