E46 - Rust under trunk lid grip and frame plate - FIY

Hi everyone, just wanted to share my experience in case anyone else might be in the same boat.

2002 330CI - my trunk lid grip gasket was well in need of replacement, and the grip was always a little loose since I bought the car, but there were always more important things to work on. I finally decided to get a new gasket, new screws and clips, and rework the thing.

When I took off the grip, I noticed that the deteriorated gasked had been letting water in that was pooling around the clips and plate lights. There was a great deal of surface rust. Also, at some point a PO must have used pointed screws to affix a plate, because there were four rusty voids in the paint aligning with the plate screws.

Gald I found out - sanded and painted over with the closet match I could find for now - my trunk can use a full repaint soon in any case so I wasn't worried about the small amount of off-colour that will be visible for the short term.

Just something to be aware of if you've been thinking about your trunk grip. And if you do end up going through something similar, the wire harness for the grip can be accessed by removing the top of trunk lid liner. Sorry for the crappy iphone pic.

Doesn't BMW have a 12 year rust protection warranty (assuming factory paint)?

There wasn't any perforation - that's what it seems they cover.

I've heard 2 stories. 1) Perforation only and 2) Rust bubbles.

Practically useless if it's perforation only I'd say.

I had this issue taken care of under warranty. Budd's took it in for an inspection - I had heavy bubbling.

Thanks for the input. I've destroyed the evidence already...live and learn.
