Bought a GEM - 1991 Civic Si

So I ended up buying another 1991 civic si.
Believe it or not, the car was owned by Bill Gardiner of Motoring TV on TSN.
http://www.motoringtv.com/quakerstate-garage-s11563

I spoke with Bill Gardiner. He told me that when he owned the car, it was never winter driven, stored in heated
garage every winter, and had no body or paint work. He used it fro trips to his cottage and Florida.
The second owner only put 5,000 kms in 2 years.
The car is in amazing condition ! 105,000 kms, all original !
The cars' sunroof visor was signed by Bill himself...LoL
I gotta go get a spare key from Bill next week when he's not busy.

The car is beyond prestine ! Only a couple minor chips, that were touched up.
It has skunk2 coilover sleeves on OEM shocks. Those will be changed later on. Gonna add a 320mm momo monte carlo wheel, same as my crx.

Price = Priceless.
To me, there just wasnt anything else on the market worth buying
at this price point..
Gave her a wash today and took a few pics.

I had a bunch of maintenance work done to it. Everything was original, from the fuel filter, to the timing belt and water pump !

- replaced timing belt + water pump
- drained engine block and radiator, added new Honda type 2 Coolant
- new thermostat
- new alternator belt
- new fuel filter
- flushed old engine oil using Amsoil engine flush
- Changed engine oil and filter used Amsoil 10w40
- changed original distributor cap and rotor (did myself)
- 4 new spark plugs (did myself)
- replaced original spark plug wires with new NGK Blue wires (did myself)
- replaced original air filter (did myself)
- did emission smog test and passed with flying colors.
- car didnt need anything for safety certification.

Nice car, but I think the FWD drive would go more nuts over it. It looks truly MINT!

I love Civics, had a 2000 SiR, then a s2000.

As much as I loved those cars, they're not Beemers....lol

propr'one 10-10-2009 07:33 PM

Looks good. What did you pay for it?

bmwm5lover 10-10-2009 07:57 PM

It's clean, but I don't get you.

spoony_prelude 10-10-2009 08:01 PM

Wow, before I bought my 99 Coupe Si I was trying to find one of these in similar condition and may i say the word impossible is no exageration! Anyways not trying to complicate your op, but if Bill sold the car, to the second owner why would you be going to Bill for the spare key? (sorry but that didnt make sense to me lol)

Other then that congrats to a super clean ef! a true gem!

Jay

Robb 10-10-2009 08:07 PM

I got in touch with Bill through Brad Diamond (the host of motoring TV)
I wanted to get some history of the car, and he told me that he still had the spare key for the car.

Bullet Ride 10-10-2009 08:10 PM

jk

Definitely beyond mint. I haven't driven one that old but those cars are such good fun to drive. Congrats on the buy*th-up*

BMW BMXer 10-10-2009 09:34 PM

Clean, bring it down.

mkgino 10-10-2009 10:51 PM

More than 4, less than 8 . :P

jsbimmer 10-11-2009 08:48 AM

Great car...and looks to be in even greater condition.... I had one of these back in 90. It was a blast to drive and the most trouble free car I have ever owned. Best of luck with it.

v_bimmer 10-11-2009 02:21 PM

rob, are you going to be selling the other white civic???

congrats on the purchase!

He may wanna sell it though.

v_bimmer 10-11-2009 07:52 PM

so now that you have this mint civic and the crx! which one will be the winter beater??

King Luis 10-11-2009 07:56 PM

nice buy rob. can't believe that there are still mint civics like that out there. that thing is truly spotless.

Stephanie 10-11-2009 08:22 PM

congrats on the purchase! SO clean!!

Vitaly, the civic will be used for winter. It will get Krowned rustproofed, but no drilling of holes.
I wont put more than 5,000 on it from now to early April.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

magnus 10-14-2009 03:44 PM

you need to put some dark coloured rims on it and deck it. I always thought these were the best civics!

Ya I agree..

bimbimma 10-14-2009 09:34 PM

nice car...you should try and get a hold of honda canada and see if they'd want anything to do with it....at my work we got a hold of a clean del sol and honda canada wanted to purchase it for shows and such (i work at honda)

all in all a great car..i used to have a 93 SI in immaculate condition, no winters and always stored with low KM...ended up selling it for just over $7000. great cars...especially if you want a toy to play around with thats not gonna cost you much!

Great buy!

No thanks..
Honda Canada upset me regarding disclosing some info I wanted to know, and they wouldnt allow me to take pics of my Crx outside of the Alliston plant.
*mumble*

bimbimma 10-14-2009 09:48 PM

wow....well that sucks...kinda stupid of them...anyways...good buy!

Gamite 10-15-2009 12:33 AM

Rob, that car is too clean to be driving in winter.

I think so too! I would keep it as clean and mint as possible!

BMW BMXer 10-15-2009 07:35 AM

^ I agree why not just drive an already rotting one/not original bodywork one in the winter?

bmwm5lover 10-15-2009 09:25 AM

If he is only driving 5k the whole winter( how so little j don't know) he doesn't need to worry. Nothing is gnna happen to it.

Fel 10-15-2009 10:28 AM

That's a funny looking M3 :huh?:

Very clean, I'll give you that... congrats. Shame to winter drive it though, there really aren't many '91 Civics that look like that anymore.

Robb 11-16-2009 12:40 PM

Well I finished my engine bay detail.. took about 4 days total.

I used WD-40 and a paintbrush and 4 microfiber towels.
Works amazing on 20 year old buildup of dirt and rustproofing. No joke.
Car had been sitting for 10+ years.. Buildup of rustproofing and dust on it takes its toll.

New powdercoated valve cover. 10% Gloss texture black.

jeremy 11-16-2009 01:04 PM

You missed your calling...awesome detail job!

JNSchnitzer 11-16-2009 01:11 PM

Why would you drive this in winter? It would be a shame.

BMW BMXer 11-16-2009 04:53 PM

Why did you clean the under hood of a winter beater so well?

It's just going to get all filthy again

Dan Bro 11-16-2009 07:57 PM

Nice find, congrats on the car, I use to have a '89 civic dx, with a zc motor.... these cars are awesome to drive around with.

bmwm5lover 11-17-2009 04:48 PM

Wow, can you do my engine bay?

Bullet Ride 11-17-2009 06:20 PM

Seriously all you used is a paintbrush, wd-40, and some towels? I guess everything has a light film of oily residue on it now. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Before and after is crazy. How much stuff did you have to pull apart to get into all the nooks and crannies?

craz azn 11-17-2009 06:39 PM

You forgot to mention all the new fancy bolts and hardware you used, oh and a can of spray paint or two for all those brackets and heat shields. Giving everyone a false sense of hope with that WD-40 can :P

spoony_prelude 11-17-2009 06:46 PM

so anyways rob hows about you get your ass to my garage and get started on the vert:) Please and thank you!

Rob could u do like a break down of how you cleaned ur engine bay, it sounds stupid but I like seeing how others work and how differently they do things. I doubt you just wd-40'd it. Power washer maybe first? any detergent? howd you remove the rust proofing?

Thanks

Jay
