^ thats the point.

make the limit 130 and enforce that as the maximum limit. let people to continue to drive the speeds they already do. 100-130.

people wont automatically start going 150-160. but that would mean less ticket revenue .

reverse to this some doctor guy just proposed to lower toronto limits by 20km/h all over the city. LMFAO. gtfo

no disrespect but that's a naive point. of course people will drive faster than the posted limit and there is no way police can enforce a max 130 speed limit with no leeway.

anyway, this won't happen in Ontario and if it does it won't be for many many years. hopefully by then, however unlikely, Ontario has better roads and a better driver training program in place.

I liked the system I saw on the highways in Italy while I was there last fall. Their highways have variable speed limits. Wherever there was an on ramp/merge lane there would be a reduced speed limit of 70-90km/h depending on how short the merge lane was. These zones had speed cameras which forced everyone to obey the speed limit (within 10km/h). Having everyone travelling at a constant speed made it much smoother and easier for trucks or slower cars manage merging onto the highway. Once the merge zone was passed speed signs would ramp up to 90km/h and then 130km/h. However as everyone knows this system will only function if drivers use proper etiquette. If the government is worried about losing revenue from speeding tickets they can make up for it by handing out tickets to people riding the left lane in situations where traffic volume isn’t a reasonable explanation.

Ottawa to lower residential speed limit & a bit about the whiners that made it happen

There are dumb crooks and then there are dumb whiners.

A fuming east-end cyclist told Ottawa police too many drivers are speeding along Innes Rd., going 80 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Last month, cops nailed him driving his car at 100 km/h in the same stretch.

“He’s guilty as anybody else is — even worse — 40 km over the speed limit. Another 10 km, I’ll take your car from you,” said Sgt. Mark Gatien of east division traffic section.

“So you’d think that somebody that’s concerned about the speed limit on there because ‘when I’m driving my bicycle, it’s very scary that the cars are passing by me at 20 km over the speed limit,’ ”

In the hope of slowing down motorists, Kitchissippi Coun. Katherine Hobbs is pushing for a lower residential limit — to 40 km/h from 50 km/h — taking a page from the City of Gatineau, where a new bylaw kicks in next month
