Symtoms, advice?
Car is a 95 325i

-Coming to a stop, the revs bounce a bit around 500 revs. Severe enough to be annoying and having lights dim on and off a few times before it settles.
-Sluggish below 4000 rpm.
-Check Engine light was on for a bit after I did a sea form, then it went off, then back on and now off. Over a period of 2 weeks.
-gas consumption higher than normal

Whats been done so far:
-MAF and ICV have been cleaned.
-Sparks checked, was a bit of oil on first 3 spark plugs so changed valve cover gasket.
-Fuel Filter changed.

Still have the problem although, the rough idle at stop is now rare in occurrence...looking around I think its the VANOS, but no noise coming from it.

Check for a vacuum leak?

Seyar 04-01-2013 12:23 AM

start with vacuum leaks, ignition coils, sparkplugs

check the air intake boot after the maf, same thing happened to me. replaced the leaking boot and everything was good.

O2 sensor would be my guess, I had similar issues.

No vacuum leaks

Sometimes when I accelerate, the engine will just have no power and 'flutter' with sporadic little jumps in acceleration

Then when I accelerate again there's no problems and everythings normal

Last week the power flutters would happened at around 3500 rpm

Today its been on and off in all rpm ranges

Did you have it smoke tested? Or some other foolproof method? Those pesky things can hide on you!

how does it behave on cold starts? Did you stomp test it to see what codes are stored?

cold start it'll idle at 1k rpm then go back down to 600 after the engines warms. Idle will also bounce a bit after near redline.

stomp test revealed a lambda, but that was from the sea form I did a few weeks ago...after I reset it there have been no more codes

Doing more research on this, it has to be a vacuum leak I missed.

If I put my foot down, I instantly experience a loss in power (sometimes almost complete loss). But if I accelerate normally then there's no problem. I am thinking the high pressure at full acceleration is opening up a hole and keeping it open, while at normal acceleration there isn't enough pressure to get the hole open, so I don't experience its problems.

And Im thinking the reason I lose power is the MAF is registering no air flow so the computer is cutting the fuel, which explains the serve power loss?

update: found the leak, acceleration is much better but it still feels a bit uneven...0-60 run was 8.9 seconds. Car has 260,000 kilometers. But I still think the vanos is failing. I hear a faint rattling.

Where was the f'er

hoses connecting to ICV had hairline cracks around the seals, and so did the hose going into the manifold from it. Replaced all hoses and cleaned the icv as well just cause I was there and it was a pita already
