View Full Version : BMW Testing in car IP networking

Looks like all major components of all the control systems(including ABS, Airbags, idrive, etc) for BMW cars in the future may be connected through Internet protocol via Lan to a central server in the car. Hackers start your, or someone else's, engines!
Never thought I would see the day I would have to worry about the car getting a virus. Lets hope they use a OS more stable than Vista, perhaps Linux.

it'll most likely be some form of linux.
i probably won't buy it until i know it's faultless.

If you want to know what type of gadgets cars will have in the future, watch a James Bond flick. Minus the rockets and guns of course.:D

They're just talking about BMW changing the networking protocol to IP... I don't see it saying anything about changing the OS controlling the devices. Two different things.

Sorry I mixed up the links, this is what I read talking about a pc,
"In order to enable a radical simplification of the network jungle, the BMW engineers tested the aptitude of the Internet Protocol for applications in engine compartment and dashboard. For their experimental in-car network, they used standard PC and embedded electronic parts and included, among other ECUs, engine control (DME), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and dashboard head unit. In addition, a multimedia server and a camera were part of the network; gateways connected conventional non-standard automotive applications."
For all the details see link below:
