So what do you guys consider the best engine swap for the ole e30? I was thinking the engine out of an e28M5 would probably give the best gain with the least amount of effort. I assume the e36 M3 motor would be nice but the electrical would be a nightmare. Would it be beneficial to rebuild the stock motor to higher specs or is the swap easier? Just kind of tossing ideas around at the moment.

E60 M5 V10

do it.

i'm serious. Best swap i have ever done. Soo much power. It only took me 4 solid hours of work and 12 beers.

Oh my! Its done already??? When i went there the ole m20 he had was there and now its gone! Poof! Next 4hrs later he calls me all drunk and shit and hes like "Yo i got like v10 powerz now...." and he was slurring so much shit like the motor bolted in with out even removing the m20.....so he just pshopped the m20 out of that pic but its there in case he wants more power than V-10. He told me if you can fill up wiper fluid and blinker fluid, you can do the swap no problem dogg. Its batshit fast!!!

BTW if u go to like standard auto wreckers they have a section in the back corner guarded by this short blackanese miget called E30 engine swapz. Just give him a pound and he'll let you in. You can buy the v10 from there for like $50.00 and $60.00 with the transmission.

e28m5 engine would be exremely hard to locate and very expensive best bet is to do one of the e36 engine swaps m/s50 or an m30 swap out of an e28/e34/e24. Search around this topic has been talked about to death. There is whole sections on r3vlimited.com about each swap.

Thanks for the info oldskool. I'll take a look at that site.

I'm feeling the V10 swap. I got a #10 wrench and some vice grips. That should be enough eh?

you need beer - go for Warsteiner to make it more DTM.

a stubby flat head wouldn't be a bad idea and a healthy stock of Zorin's suggestion before you even pop the hood

Been doing a little research about it and wow the s38 is immensley expensive. I can almost buy a wrecked M3, hell even a running M3 (US) for the price of just the engine. Ouch. It'll be soo much cheaper to run an e36 based engine. Kind of a let down though, those s38's have a certain charm being period correct to the age of the car and I find they just look cooler under the hood.

If you want period correct for very cheap, the M30 Big Six (fundamentally a destroked S38 with a SOHC head) can give you a good amount of power for very cheap. It's not going to be a monster like an S38 E30, but with the saved money you can put a turbo on it and really start cooking with gas.

Well I'd like to see the power hit mid to high 200's on HP. I've actually got a spare M20 "E" Motor lying around. I could build it but just figured it would be cheaper/easier to swap. I know where I can get an M30 for about $100 too? Should I pick it up?
