View Full Version : Alright guys, this is what a eta bottom end and i head gets you.

Ok I'm posting this for the eta guys that ask about going stroker and what keeping their eta bottom end will get them interms of power. I've seen many posts from guys saying going eta bottom end with i head will not net much of a gain as the compression ratio is too low. Most guy say use super eta pistons etc, which I agree with, but for those guys on a budget that don't want to tear apart their bottom end and just slap on a i head, the car is still pretty quick and very fun and is in a similar category as a stock i.

Ok I dynoed my car at Tagracecraft about a week ago and it put down 138 and 143 torque.

Here is the plot

http://img2.putfile.com/main/10/29919095680.jpg

As you can see there is distortion in the plot, I mostly fixed that issue by changing my plug wires yesterday. At WOT it's smooth now.

Ok this may not seem like much, but compared to my car stock it would destroy it. Also the numbers are similar to a 325i but with some more low end torque.

138 whp moves the car along nicely, here are a couple videos I made today. (On private property )

First 0-135km/h

90-150km/h

(Also on our private airport runway :))

Here is a video of my engine bay

I have a 2 and 1/4" exhaust and cone filter, otherwise no other bolt ons. It's running on Megasquirt 2 V3 with EDIS-6 for ignition. Oh yeah and 3.73 lsd.

I built this for turbo, I've lined up all my parts and will be installing them this winter, it's actually a 524td crank and eta rods and pistons but the 524td crank is basically a eta crank but forged. Time to add 200 WHP to this plot for next year *rockout*

I wanted to break this motor in n/a and it was a great daily driver like this.

BTW here is a video of my old car, was a Mercury Mystique that I slapped a 3L into, made a great sleeper.

Hmm. Well I admit the 0-135 vid seemed good. Until I noticed it was the older speed gauge that goes to 220. I wondered why the needle moved so fast. Off the line its OKAY, not great.

The 90-150 pull is terrible. I am DEAD SURE a good condition STOCK 325I would take it.

I bet ya you take that ghey cone filter off and replace it with the stock airbox with a new paper filter, it will be better than the power loser hot air intake you have.

Good work on the engine though!

Lol well yeah, not trying to impress the 325i guys just making a point that you can basically rape a stock 325e by slapping on a 325i head. I bet this setup would still make a better daily driver than a stock 325i as at any given rpm you have more torque. I also have a pretty shitty exhaust that I just slapped on to get me through the break in. There are too many variables when comparing on car to another but for the guys that say a puting a 325i head on a eta bottom end does not net much gains cleary are not talking from experience. I had planned on running my car turbo right from the get go but I had issues fitting my intercooler and I had to move so I had to get my car running n/a. I grabbed one of my intercooler pipes and went to Canadian tire and grabbed the cheapest cone filter I could find. My stock airbox was long gone. So if someone wanted to do this right they should get custom pistons and do it proper but might aswell go m50 for all the haassle. For the eta guys on a budget just slap on the i head, easier than a 325i motor swap with similar hp at then end. My car atleast as a eta was ridiculously slow almost made you laugh when you hit the gas.

I'll post some videos in the spring once I have another couple hundred whp *love*

Comparing your plot to my bone stock run from years ago, this is pretty much true. Your torque curve is noticeably fatter from 2000-3500, but at that point my stock B25 catches up and slightly passes your motor (peaking at 147lb/ft @ 4200rpm). Overall, above 3500rpm the power and torque curves are identical in shape with the B25 making very slightly more power.

I see your point. People like to say that this head swap is useless, but it does in fact make for a car that is very very close in performance to a stock B25.

This is my dynograph done on my bone stock 87 325is before I turbocharged it. My car was parked for about 3 years, with 3 year old 87% octane gas in the tank, old plugs etc.

I started it and drove it straight to the dyno shop which uses a Mustang dyno, know for being a bit more conservative than the Dynojet. The Mustang dyno always gave lower results than the Dynojet, some people say it's more accurate.

Based on your dyno pull, the stroker has higher torque gains which is important for performance, my HP is slightly higher. if I did a dyno pull on the Dynojet, my results would be higher.

Nice info and clips BTW.

Can the E header fit for the I head??

Yes I'm using my eta exhaust manifolds right now.

Yeah that's why I called BS on buddy claiming he put down 207 WHP and 210 WHP in this thread.

http://www.maxbimmer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96457

I had headers full exhaust, extrude honed intake manifold mustang throttle body etc. On a DOHC 3L with 24 valves with a 10:1 compression ratio which put down 201. Buddy was claiming 207 WHP with 8.8 compression ratioed 2.7L inline 6 12 valve motor. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.... I'd loved to be proven wrong but yeah...

It was a great sleeper, got some pretty classic WTF looks with it. :D

Here is a vidoe of it shooting some fire on the 3-4 shift.

Also here is a picture when I just finished putting my m20 back togehter.

^^^^^Yep. Even the 4cyl m42 in good condition would beat you. If you can wait a year i'll have a M20B25 for sale, Verry cheap.

Wait about 6 months and I'll have a turbo ETA i setup. I have everything but a manifold and random tubing and fittings.

Nah, it actually won't. etas are faster than M42s.

You'll have a Turbo I setup? or a Turbo E setup? Which one? I'm confused lol

Ouch, that one hurt on the inside a bit.

I plan on doing the ETA bottom end and i head, then boosting it.
