WHAT SORT OF PROBLEMS WOULD ROB POwER? I HAVE AN 84 318I WITH THE M10, DONT LAUGH. i DROVE IT DOWN THE STREET TODAY WITH NO WINDOWS YET LOL AND IT HAD SHIT PICK UP. I HAVE NO CAT, CUSTOM EXHAUST 2.5" AND COLD AIR INTAKE ALONG WITH LONG TUBE HEADERS, SO AIR FLOW ISNT A PROB. COULD SOMETHING SMALL LIKE AN 02 SENSOR GOING BAD OR FUEL FILTER DIRTY CAUSE LOW POWER? JUST WONDERING WHAT OBVIOUS THINGS I SHOULD BE LOOKING AT. SORRY FOR THE CAPS, JUST NOTICED AND I AM NOT RETYPING ALL THIS again. cheers guys!
and please dont tell me its an m10, it has no power, because i know this car should have more pickup then it does.

it won't be an O2 sensor... it could be a fuel filter issue, or AFM issue... does it sound like it breaking up at all? or does it drive smooth but just has no power?

did you do the timing belt on it before you drove it? if yes, maybe u'r off one tooth on the cam?

Give the car a good, thorough tune up, then report back. Plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter etc, are excellent items to address in a tune up. It probably could use it. I know its an m10, but an automatic WILL make it much, much worse.

Lol m10... sry :)

Edit: did you do the timing belt on it before you drove it? if yes, maybe u'r off one tooth on the cam?

Its got a timing chain. 84 318i is not the twin cam I think you may be referring to.

EDIT #2 Holy **** what was I thinking!??! m42 doesnt have a belt either Doh!... lol only the m40 and m43 do I believe... (I think they are belt driven...)

EDIT #3 Damnit. Curiosity got the best of me so I had to look it up. M40 (SOHC) has a belt, M42 (DOHC) chain, M43 (SOHC) chain, M44 (DOHC) chain.

i will adress the tune up issues, and if it still doesnt go then i will burn it. jj i will just drive it around slowly till i put in the turbo, at least its cool to just cruise in a bmw.

alright didn't know the m10 was a chain... still even if he did (or the previous owner even-don't know if he drove it before he did all the work) the chain it could be a tooth off and that would cause the car to be real sluggish...

it also agree, a tune up would be a good idea... although from what I'm getting from the OP's post is that his car is a sled. Plugs and stuff would make the car missfire and what not, but if everything else was ok it should still "pull" ok.

the worst thing you can possibly do is boost a motor that isn't running properly in the first place.

probably all the long header/ intake stuff..no seriously..
bet it has great 'top end' right, pulls ok/good above 3500/4000?

on a small displacement motor back pressure & less velocity make better low end torq for daily drivability.
in na motors

Have you done a compression test? My guess if compression is ok and you do a full service then you have timing issues.

Tune up, compression test, and drive it to redline. You changed the properties of the motor by adding headers.

Oh, and it's an M10, so it's slow :P

Its having no windows that cuts the aerodynamicy of that fine Munik Legund ;)

Installing them will create a slip-stream effect and velocity will increase exponentially.

alternatively you could just drop a bigger engine in or turbo it mannnn.. cuz mods on an old e30 make them so fast. like crazy fast lolll

ok i have the bentley so dont tell me to buy one please. What procedure do i use to see if all cylinders are running? also if one isnt how is that corrected? really learning on this car but i am still really new to engine work.

well in the bently theres pictures of spark plug condition..
you could pop ur plugs & compare..

theres spritzing water on your wires/coil or distrib at night while running to look for arcing.
or laying em out (wires) wtih plug in it 1 at a time & firing the car see if you see sparc.
^do not hold them while doing that :D

then theres a compression test.
