just wondering if anyone can tell from the following pics if this crank is in good shape? i want to use it in my turbo 318i build. it is a forged crank out of a 2002. at least i think it is forged. it is being shipped to me so i want to make sure its in ok shape before i pay the shipping and duty.

well... seems like theres some scoring on it. From the looks of the pics it seems like it could be smoothed out by a good machine shop.

The real concern is how much you paid for it, if you didn't pay too much, then you should be good!

If anyone can jump in here it would be great. I need to verify that this is forged, i will be having it shipped to me so i dont want to get it and find out that its not what i need. thanks guys. I know one of you said its cast but i just want to know what made you come to that conclusion. And if you can can you let me know if i am right in looking for a forged crank to do the turbo build.

Is the crank in your poessesion? A crankshaft machine shop would be able to tell you if its forged or cast.

I dont have it yet, i was hoping the pictures could help someone verify it for me. I have read a few things about the width of the seams , and if certain parts of the crank are smooth or rough it can be a sign of whether its cast or forged.

Here's some Volvo cranks. The cast ones have a thin line (right) vs a wide area for the forged cranks (left)

Cast cranks smell and taste differently from forged ones
