Hey,

So I just bought my first BMW, 1987 325e and I don't know much about it. The one problem with it is, the tach and temp gauge doesn't work. After doing some research I found out it may be the battery in the SI board. Now I don't know 100% if that is it because when I start the car the check light flashes and then when I press the check button it turns off, I don't know if the SI board is working because this would lead me to believe that it would be working if this is...

Any help would be appritiated.

Thanks,

Sam

did you try slapping the dash with your palm? that sometimes works, haha

but seriously, that check light doesnt have much to do with the SI board, its a separate circuit. the ones the SI board controls are the green/yellow/red LEDs and the 'oilservice' light. its very easy to pull the cluster and take it apart to see if the batteries are leaking all over the place. if you need help with it pm me. i had to do the exact same with my car.

So the tach and temp gauge are controlled by the SI board?

So if I take it apart and see the batteries pissing everywhere what do I do?

you need to replace the batteries/clean the board or just get a new one. new they go for ~200. Fil at Eurostyle may have a good cluster for you for a lot cheaper. just swap in your old speedometer so you keep your mileage, and your good to go.

Yea, I wanted to avoid buying a new SI board because they are so expensive, is there a way to fix the old one, or find out if a one at the junk yard is working without actually turning the car on?

Judging by the wiring diagrams I was just looking at it looks like the Tach is run off the SI board and the temp gauge isn't, actually looking at it now, it doesn't even look like the tach is run off the SI board.

Another thing that doesn't work is the MPG gauge.

Dammit.

SamE30...

I have 2 old clusters kicking around... you are welcome to the two of them for $50.00... I used to have an 85 325 e and it's same as yours...

Thanks, if I can't figure this out i'll have to take you up on that offer. But i'll probably only need one :D

Sam, Punzzells (Mike) is the reason my e30 looks/performs the way it was he is a good dude and will hook you up.

My SSK, Chip, suspension and exhaust all came from him.

Also I have a bunch of random ass parts in my basment if you need any.

What chip do you have?
I was looking at the Turner Motorsports or the Bovarian Motorsport. I'm going to probably gut the cat when I change the clutch then throw a baffled muffler on it. If I do anymore to the motor then that it will most likely be a turbo.

If I can't figure the tach out, i'll probably just get the cluster off Punzzells

I have a Jim C chip.

Get a Mark D chip though.

What are the power gains from it, do you need to run premium?

for a 325 E, you get really good HP and torque gains and you extend the RPM's to 5300 instead of 4900.... I think all the chips for this car are pretty much the same.. Turner, Bavarian, Jim C, or Mark D... average of 21-24 bhp and 13 - 17 ft lbs of torque..

if you are going to go turbo, don't buy thr chip.. get a turbo chip or use the stock on as you will want to retard the timing a bit to stay in boost longer... make sure you get a nice KN for the car and cut some small holes in your air box... nice lil mod to do.

I only saw a turbo chip for the 325i. I think i'll eventually just go with a chip, intake and exhaust.
Other then that i'll just do suspension work because I want to do some auto x.

I was looking at the Mark D chip, it raises the rev limit to 5500rpm, isn't that a little bad for a stock engine with stock fueling?
