I never knew it came in a 6 spd.? Can anyone explain this?

They come 6 speed standard. 7 speed auto is an option.

^ Correct. However, does anyone know how the change was implemented? Ie. Did they reduce the price by a grand or so and made the 6spd manual standard with SMG as an option, since previous cars were standard with SMG?

Actually, funny story is North America is the only continent (excl. Mexico) to get the 6 Speed. Europe incl. Germany does not even get the E60 M5 in 6 speed!!! Crazy but true. That is what Car and Driver wrote.

It's probably because they got tired of entertaining lawsuits of broken SMG boxes. At 24k a piece (the M3 was anyway), I remember they were saying that misshifts and stuff void the warranty. Except I'm sure people who can afford an M5 here, can also afford to ask a judge for an opinion on the voided warranty.
