View Full Version : What rims should I get?

I'm getting new rims this spring, but I still dont know what I want.

I kinda want those M-Parallels, (replicas) But should I look for 17" or 18"?

Or should I look for an aftermarket company like Breyton?

Pros for 18"
Looks much better

Cons
less sidewall for conering
added weight
more expensive

pros/cons for 17" vice versa.

My current tire size is 225/60 R15
Tire size for 17" 235/45-17 OE difference -1.2%
Tire size for 18" 235/40-18 OE difference -0.9%

I asked someone who had Replicas and they said that the 18"s weigh 21 lbs, and 24 lbs with rubber.

Some people say that I will get more tire rub if I get 18, but I dont understand if the wheel diameter is going to be the same.

What kinda width should I be looking at? 8"? or 8.5"

Do 18's come with 8"?

Will I be sacraficing too much if I get 18"s? Am I going to have wheel rub problems?

Here's an E34 with 17" M-Parallels, too small for my big car?

Any help would be great! Thanks guys.

Go for 18"
17's look abit small on the E34 IMO.
18's would be perfect with the car lowered
btw, nice choice of wheel *th-up*

That car in the picture and my car are lowered.. 1st Gen E34's dont lower nicely like E36's.. Unless I get coilovers.. $$$

i think 17's look fine but the car really needs to be lowered more
i'm sure somebody can get your springs that lower it a little more

18's would make it look better, but again, it needs to be lowered to give it that nice sharp look

i'll keep my eyes out for springs for ya

How about some 17inch BBS DEEEEEP dishes. Something like
the new 5 series. Theres nothing like deep dishes on a German car, well, to me anyways.:P

Dirtyman, if I had the cash for BBS, I'd defeinately get something along those lines..

djcontra, H&R and Eibach both only lower my car 1.5 in the front and 1 in the back. Remember, I drive this car in the winter so too low isnt a good idea..

What other wheel companies are there, so far I've looked at Hamman (HM2 - too expensive) BBS (RX - too expensive) Breyton (inspirations or visions), OZ (nova), ACS (dont like)

I like the inspirations, but I think they look weird on bigger cars, visions look nice, but no one seems to have them

OZ nova's have a nice deep dish that I like. But I'm looking for something with less spokes.

Hahaha.. Yeah I like that green one, 10 hp Type R sticker right?

The M5's are nice, but I dont like it on my car cuz it doesnt have enough of a dish on it.

Jules,

There is no doubt about this issue. Definately get 18's!!!!! Don't even consider a plus one moded wheel for your E34. Why would you spend the money for 1 extra inch that looks like a 16" anyways? The ride between the 17" and 18" are almost the same (it's the Z-rated reinforcement that makes the tires stiff). If it's the money, than save up some more before the purchase. I also think the M parallels are the best looking of the above choices. I think they're stronger than any Breytons (I heard they're weak). Just MHO

putting M rims on your bimmer always looks good, I just like the look of upgraded wheels but still having that BMW emblem on your wheel, the M Paralles are a good choice

I would go with the m-parallels. They look good! I would never go anything smaller than 18" esp on an E34. Personally i would have to get 19" or even 20" on that, but 18" is good. and yes they do come in 18 by 8. Good luck! All good choices.*th-up*

I just found the prices for Hamann HM2's and HM3's, and they're much cheaper than I expected. HM2's 18" for 305 and HM3's 17" for 279~! (american prices of course) But the smallest width is 8.5. Do you guys think I'll have any problems with that width?

Derek, thanks for the kind offer, but I believe 3er's have the wrong offset for my car.

Both rims are really sweet looking but since the HM3's come only in 17" i would go with the HM2. I don't think you should have a problem with 8.5 width, but double check.
