But at this time of year, I see waaaay too many pigeons screwing on the roof of the smaller building next to mine though. *shiner*

carjoe
04-09-2007, 12:24 AM
I'm not really looking for one but the one that's on the car has been smoked by multiple snowbanks. There is nothing behind this bumper. No ducts, no fogs and no temp sensor. Should there be anything else?

Anyway, aside from everything that's missing, it's got some monster scrapes on the driver's side and it had some sheetmetal screws holding the inner fenderwell, straight through the bumper I might add...

I'll try and make it to next week's meet that you guys can see how bad it is and if I should just get another bumper to paint over.

What's a new nose panel worth?

Nascar318is

I did a compression check last night and changed the plugs on the e30, 155-160 across the board which i guess is good. Chromius, remember I said I think we bought the wrong plugs a LONG time ago? No the tank is perfect. While installing my SS brake lines the hard lines were super rusted and crumbled apart so I am replacing all the hard lines in the rear. I also have to changee the snap rings that holds the half shafts into the diff and I geuss the seals as well. Than after that I have to reinstal the tank, instal new center support bushing, guibo and DS, front SS lines, antenna, oil change. Than I can finally drop it and wash the bird shit off of it. *mumble*

The needle on my speedometer is acting erratic and bouncing. Doesn't work most of the time. My odometer and another component (don't know whats it called) on the cluster only work when my speedometer works. My rpm hand still works the other gauges (temp, gas) seem to be working but the speedometer is acting up. My SI board I think is shot as none of those lights come on. I'm leaning towards having to change my whole instrument cluster (which I tried to do today until I got to a point where I had to take out the steering wheel as I couldn't get the cluster out. I was hoping I didn't have to touch any of the steering wheel components.). Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Removing the steering wheel is fairly easy. You pop out the BMW logo in the middle of the wheel with a flat head, than simply remove the nut and take off the wheel. Make sure your wheels are straight and the stering wheel is straight before removing so it lines up easily when your done. also I think you may have to unlock the wheel (insert key into ignition) to be able to remove it. (couldn't remove the wheel on a vert until I unlocked it)

I have been able to remove the cluster without removing the wheel though so you should try tilting/playing with it and if you still can't get it to work pop off the wheel.

chromius
04-23-2007, 10:14 AM

Yeah that's right, to actually take the wheel off it has to have the lock disengaged, but on the other hand, it makes it much easier to take off/put on the 22mm nut when the lock is engaged. So Leave it locked until the nut is off.:)

waelman, The cluster comes out really easily, like less than 5 min kinda easy. You shouldn't have to replace your whole cluster, you should just be able to replace the spedometer seperatly. I had the exact same problem a while back. Pulled a working spedometer out of a broken cluster, then cracked open the odometer gears and set my miliage to what the odometer of the broken speedo was reading. If you need a hand let me know.*th-up*

Just make sure to test the spedo sensor in the diff before pulling the cluster to eliminate that as a possible problem.

Well, first a visual inspection, jack up the back of the car. Take a look at the sensor located in the differential cover, check for frayed wires, especially where it goes up above the rear sway bar. Pull the connector off, and check the contacts, make sure they arn't corroded.

Next grab a multimeter, and with it set on Diode check (iirc), connect the leads to the sensor pins, and spin the wheel. It should give you a pulse as the wheels turn.

Actually, before you do all that, does your cruise control still work?

wow! thats a lot of information and a lot of things I cannot do. Maybe I shouldn't undertake this job alone. I don't even have a multimeter let alone know what a multimeter does. As for the cruise control, I'm pretty sure it still works, I'll confirm later in the day i.e. lunch time. If it doesn't work, what does that mean? If it does, what does that mean. More and more I find out what I have to do, the more I think I'll have to forego my plans for tonight. Thanks for all the help and the tips.

It's really not as hard as it sounds. A multimeter is just an instrument for measuring voltage, current, continuity, resistance etc. It's your best friend when you own an e30:D You can buy them for like $20-30 for a basic one from Canadian tire, and has a million uses when you get into troubleshooting electrical problems.

If your cruise still works, then chances are your speedometer sensor is fine, because it uses that input to keep your specified speed. So back to the guage.

So I decide to go out for lunch and take a couple of spins around the block to see if my cruise control works. It doesn't work but the kicker, my speedometer was working. What the @#$@#$ ? Its probably a coincedence but I tried real hard to get my speedometer to stop working, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I'm totally confused now. What do you think I should do. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I bought this multimeter and I spend forever trying to get it going, don't even know how to use it still. Jacked up the car, did a visual inspection of the speed sensor. The sensor looked brand new, didn't proceed to go any further. Put the car back on the ground, failing to put the parking brake on,...all of the sudden the car starts rolling towards our basketball net, here I am at the back of the car trying to stop it from rolling into our basketball net, wifey comes out being captain obvious and all and tells me the car is moving, I use my spidey like reflexes and I run and jump into the front seat and put the parking brake up. Phew that was a close one. I then proceed to take the steering wheel of, I take of the horn/emblem cover and find two condom wrappers. Un-opened. I couldn't stop laughing, showed wifey and she started laughing. Are they supposed to be there? LOL. Didn't get any further as 'House' was starting. The speedometer saga continues, tonight, I'll take the cluster out.
Question: How do you adjust the km reading on the speedometer? I took it out of the cluster but I don't know how to adjust the numbers to read what is on my current speedometer.

The odometer adjustment is a huge pain in the ass, Pull the speedometer guage out of the cluster, then very very carefully you have to pull out all the main gears on the back of the clear plastic speedometer housing (alot of it is press fit) then with some precision screw drivers very carefully spread the numbered gears apart and turn them to the desired numbers. It's really easy to break some of those plastic bits, so just take your time. I heard of others connecting a drill to the gears and doing it that way, but I tried that and it was taking forever (going from 100,000 to 300,000), so I gave up and took it apart instead. Patience and remembering where the gears go back is key.:) They purposely make it really hard so that people can't just roll back their odo's

Ebay, Junk yards, Parts cars, online parts stores. You can go to the dealer, but it's gonna be expensive.

There are always full clusters floating around on e-bay, so start there, that would cover your speedometer. The speed sensor might be just as easy to pick up at the dealer, since it shouldn't be too expensive, but who knows.

Sorry I missed you guys on Friday, I really wanted to make it out as well. This time with "Princess". LOL. Thats the name my wife has given the car. Basically its an expensive love affair.

I'm still looking for seats, front driver one in particular (mine is done). I was actually thinking of getting seat covers from Bav. Auto but if you've got some seats I can buy/have, that would be AWESOME. With regards to the cluster, it reads VDO. Whats the difference? Will it include the S.I. board? I'm actually still troubleshooting the whole problem. Not even sure if its the cluster or the speed sensor. I'm kind of leaning towards the speed sensor and was going to get one ordered from Ottos on Monday. $43, figure its not to bad. I was going to get it from Bav. Auto, it was $35 but then realized its in USD and I would then have to pay shipping and customs taxes so better off ordering from Ottos. Could everything be working and just the S.I. board be causing the problem? I'm guessing not as my cruise control doesn't work either and an earlier post indicated that the cruise control uses the speed sensor. The saga continues,...

Can't thank you guys enough for all the help and support, its greatly appreciated. Hope to be out next Friday. Cheers.

HAHA you guys are funny, lets do the math. $1.07 a litre x 60 litre tank = $64.20 in gas lol. Now I get about 500km per tank so about 8.3 litres per 100km. Friday I work in Ottawa which is 90KM round trip. Then if I were to go to M&M Fridays there's another 110km. So making it a total of 200KM which is around $30 in gas for one day lol. :( Stupid gas prices..

WOW!! You have peaked my interest. Those sound awesome. Didn't even know I can have heated seats. Sorry for my ignorance, I'm a rookie at all this. How hard are they to install? What about heat controls? Does an 85 325e have heat controls for the seats? This is cool. I don't usually drive the bimmer in the winter. Any pics? What are the next steps?

I can take some pics tonight. Like I said, they're not in perfect condition but they look very good. With some lovin' they'd be really nice. I swapped them out because I needed more side support since I intend to someday track my car.

I have a center console with heat switches in it. If your center console (its the part around the ebrake) is in good condition, we could just swap them too. I think all you'd need for power to the heat is a 12v+ line and ground, which should be simple enough to do.

Install would be pretty simple: the back just drops in, but the fronts you'd need to install your sliders (the adjusters on the bottom of the seats) onto these; i took the sliders for my racing seats already. It would take about 15 mins once you're seats are out, which take 5 mins. All in all, easy mod! :)

I think my center console is in good shape so the swap sounds like a plan. Where are you located?
