View Full Version : Group buy: E36 Depo Gen IV headlights

Ok. I'm gonna try this ONE more time. The last thread got too big and it didn't start with a group buy in mind.

This is a group buy for EBAY depo gen IV ellipsoid (H1) headlights. Depo Gen IV are considered the best right after ZKW and BOSCH. The reason I am doing a group buy is to get a much better price. This SAME group buy was also done from the same seller, in April 2006.

Prices:

With CCFL Angel Eyes:

http://i3.ebayimg.com/01/i/06/37/3c/c9_1.JPG

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-E36-Angel-Eyes-w-Super-Bright-CCFL-EURO-HEADLIGHTS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33710QQihZ00 7QQitemZ170052423655QQrdZ1

5 people: 210USD/set + 14% tax +exchangerate = $274 CDN
10 people: 200USD/set + 14% tax +exchangerate = $261 CDN

Without CCFL Angel Eyes

http://i20.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/7f/d1/c3_1.JPG

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/92-99-BMW-E36-EURO-ELLIPSOID-PROJECTOR-HEADLIGHTS-M3-AC_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33710QQihZ007QQitemZ 170051147603QQrdZ1

5 people: ~150USD +14% tax +exchangerate = $196 CDN
10 people: ~140USD + 14% tax +exchangerate = $183 CDN

Bulbs NOT included. We can do another group buy for that.

For this price (and so that we don't have brokerage fees added on top), we will need to go pick them up at the border, so someone with a van or something will need to devote some time, and maybe everyone can chip in a few bucks for gas.

I am not sure if he will mix with AE's and without for the same prices, so for now let's just see who's interested in either.

if you're picking them up at the border, why are you paying tax?

rdtx2005
11-24-2006, 04:19 PM
i agree with mirek.. if we pick it up at the border, we have no need to pay PST/GST..

if the bulbs are from the same seller, maybe he can package a whole deal or something

Dr. Flyview
11-24-2006, 04:19 PM
if you're picking them up at the border, why are you paying tax?

We still need to declare them if you dont' want me to go to jail. You pay the Canadian taxes, but not "brokerage", which would be like the paperwork charge of having to be declared by someone else.

We don't pay importation fees because these will suppsedly be marked as being made in the USA and will be good under NAFTA agreement.

BennyL
11-24-2006, 04:38 PM
ya, that are you guys, out of your minds? dont pay tax because your picking it up yourself... thats nonsense. of course you pay tax. but you can ask the seller to give you a fake invoice with lower value for border crossing purposes, then perhaps you can save some tax money.

the big thing is the brokerage fee, as flav_cool already explained. usually it is some preposterous amount that UPS makes up.

Whats the quality like on these headlights? Will I be able to see at night? What about about condensation build up, 2 or 3 years down the road. Just want to know before I buy these. I'd rather spend twice that amount and get really good ones if these are just OK. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I'll let others chime in, but this is what I know. DEPO, the company that makes these has had different "generations", or models. In the earlier models the plastic of the headlight was cheap, and there were condensation issues. However, with the generation IV, these problems are pretty much gone, although, for example the plastic still isn't 100% as good as the ZKW's or Bosch's.

The light projection is also I would say 80% as good as the ZKW's or Bosch's. The type of light it is, is also the same, i.e. Ellipsoids that use H1 bulbs.

Thanks man. It sounds like a good deal but I think I will wait. I'm not sure the make but I saw some incredible lights with angel eyes at a store in London. They were glass and looked really nice. $580 or so.

They look pretty good. In the picture without angel eyes I could tell the plastic around the lights is black. The headlight with Angel eyes, are they also black. I can't tell because of the way the light is shining on the plastic.

Yes they are the same. THe ones with angel eyes do not even come INSTALLED with them, so they are exactly the same except without the angel eyes kit. It looks like the plastic is not black in that picture because of the angel eyes light shining on it.

Does anyone have a picture of under the hood so I can see what they look like when everything is done properly. The wiring I mean. I Don't want it to look like a clusterPhuk when they are installed. I use to work at a BMW dealership and never saw an aftermarket set that was neat and tidy looking under the hood. I'm about 70% sure on getting these.

Hmm, I don't have any "open-hood" pics of these exact set. The wiring may indeed be different than the european glass headlights these are supposed to be, only because we need that plug and play wiring harness. Other than that, nothing should really be different.

Plenty of members have headlights like these, maybe they will post a picture. *wave*

in all honestly... those prices are basically the same a jonny's, but you/someone has to do the leg work. plus you dont get the benefit of a more reputable company. lets look at the list, there are already 4 ppl that are interested. if i go we'll have six total, me plus Dreamgrl's set of Angel Eyes. i havent really been up to date regarding the situation with jonny and the last GB, but what does everyone think?
Thanks

Umm the prices aren't that close. These are about 100 cheaper for either model. That is because the angel eyes aren't "predator chromiums" on these ebay ones, and as for the non-angel eyes, I don't know why jonny's are more expensive b/c they should techincally be the same lights.

Unfortunately Jonny decided he diddn't care about the last group buy, apparent by his lack of updates and postings, so I decided to start this one.

I don't know if people that signed up in this thread already would agree with his prices... I do'nt wanna complicate the thread with jonny again. Start another thread for that, or let him start it if he's so interested in selling them. I will jump on it too if more people go for his.

^^ Flav..by the picture above it looks like the wire harness doesnt include the screw on connector/weather jacket that mates to the headlight ass'y. Have you inquired about this with the seller? without any barrier.. rain/snow can get inside the headlight ass'y and could definitely ruin the ccfls, and bulbs, not to mention short circuits.. Ah well food for thought. Good luck on the GB.

Yes, pickup should be in Toronto after we pick them up at the border. I think payment would probably be best if we got everyone to send money to a paypal account? But I heard there's like a paypal service charge? Can anyone confirm?

screw paypal and their charges... just write up a written agreement between the buyers and the people picking up.. have them all sign it. Therefore no screwing around with each other

i'm sure we are all honest people and won't rip people off.

Hmm, but yea then we would still need to pay the charge, cause I'd have to withdraw the money b/c of this:

Payment needs to be an international money order in US dollars or bank wiring transfer.

We can still make a written agreement just so you guys know I won't screw you over lol, but how will that arrange payment? You guys wanna do cash upon signing? And then I go to a bank, give them the money and make the wire transfer?

Dr. Flyview

No, they are being shipped to buffalo, and the price I quoted includes that shipping.

I will be calling the border soon to make sure what I have planned is actually possible...that is...crossing the border for less than an hour to pick something up and make sure we will only get taxed the 14% if they are "made in the US" (they will appear to be so)

ok if we do a written agreement attached to the money order i think that should be cool. And just let me know when where ready to pay for them, got money in hand.

Hold on. Written agreement between who? I understood you guys wanted a written agreement between all of you, and me and whoever wants to help me out. The money order/bank wire transfer is for the ebay seller himself.

These will take H1 bulbs. Not too sure on the pricing. It depends on the quality of the bulb too. Most people prefer osram b/c they look whiter. Can be anywhere from 10-20$ per bulb from what I understand, but even the osrams on ebay are going for about $16-$20 per PAIR...So it should be around $50 at most for the bulbs, but we will maybe try a group buy on that too.

When we get enough people so I can bother the seller, I will ask if he sells them and maybe he'll include them (will also ask about StonGuard protection).

GOod luck in vegas!

I need to figure out how exactly the payment will be made. Not everyone will be able to do cash and not everyone will be able to do it online, but I dunno, online payment through something like paypal would probably be best.

As for the payment, since it's online we may as well do USD automatically.

As of right now I'm thinking (based on what this seller has offered before as a group buy), that the price is as follows, $200USD (per set WITH CCFL AngelEyes including shipping) + 14% tax = $228USD ... but I still need to call the border and confirm with them that no sort of other taxes will be put on them! Plus it'd be cool if people could chip in for gas since I'll spend my day driving to the border getting these.

So I was thinking like $235USD to make it round.

For 2 pairs of H1 bulbs, I will do it for $12 for 2 pairs (high and low beams) or we have H1 HID kit with 9006 connector (6000k, 8000k, 10000k or 12000k) for $180 a set, add $20 if you want us to pre-installed them. We don't have StonGuard protection for these headlights, let me know once you get 10 sets.

Still waiting to see just what type of H1 bulbs these are...hopefully osrams!

You can also get PIAA H1 bulbs for these. I spent 100 bucks on PIAA lowbeam bulbs, and 20 bucks for shitty taiwan h1 high beams. the PIAA are brighter, and they come with 1 year warranty too!

Yea man, but 100 bucks!? That's as much as one headlight...screw that. We'll do a group buy on osrams or something. I don't know why the seller hasn't responded to what type of bulb it is yet. SHould I ask again?

Yea, I know what you mean. It doesn't really make much sense, but I was tired of buying replacement bulbs for every car I had. I paid for the warranty.

Yea man. And after next wednesday (december 20th, last exam), I will try and arrange all of this. Need to call the border and make sure everything is fine with going over the border just for a bit to get them, and that we won't get any other tax than the 14% GST + PST. Also need to figure out payment (and maybe some sort of contract or something) and to arrange with the seller. (He already knows we're close though, but I need to arrange payment with him and whatnot)

Also, it would be nice to get maybe 11 or more people, just in case some people don't come through with the buy. (...this could easily happen)

im interested, but you do realize that the seller is shipping them from taiwan right? so its going to take us a while to get them.

you dont need to call the border and shit, just tell them you are going to pick up car parts, and on the way back you just tell them the total amount and youll pay the duty on them.

so whats the verdict, will he mix and match with and without AE for the discount??

Hmm I didn't realize they're coming from taiwan. I was under the impression the seller is in the US. Are you sure about this?

Considering that MOST people are getting CCFL's AE's he shouldn't have a problem with mix and matching. I haven't discussed that with him yet.

Will do.

I guess I assumed he was in the US since he wanted more for shipping to Canada than to the US border

WTF, if he's shipping from taiwan, why would he rip Canadians off more? It's not like we're farther away! Now I need to check if there aren't any sort of taxes put on it from the US customs when in enters US...

We were supposed to at least make these "look" as if they're made in the US (when we cross them to Canada), otherwise it's not under NAFTA and we will pay ADDITIONAL taxes other than our PST and GST.

You never know these could be coming from the states even if he is in Taiwan, just sent him an email about this and the mixing and matching.

It's not as simple as "find another seller." There are a few things about these that make them good. 1) Depo gen IV 2) PnP (plug and play) 3) H1 projectors, not H7 reflectors, 4) good price and willing to do group buy.

Flav, if you find out that they are from Taiwan, you won't be able to apply for a NAFTA.

Also, you can't just go to the border and say "Hey, theres a NAFTA in place, I dont have to pay".

You have to fill out a 'one time' NAFTA agreement, pretty much stating that "yes, I agree these goods were made in USA"

Just because they are shipping from California doesn't mean they were made in California. The Country of origin could be Taiwan, which very well could be the case if they are Depo. brand.

I need some help figuring out payment. The seller wants wire transfer or money order ONLY (which is better). How about everyone sends money to my paypal, and then I transfer it to my bank? Then I do the wire transfer from my bank. I looked at paypal's fees schedule...someone was saying there's a 3% charge for withdrawing? Not true.

Withdraw Funds
Free for $150.00 CAD or more, $0.50 CAD for $149.99 CAD or less to bank accounts in Canada

Also how do I make sure we don't get robbed in terms of having proof he actually sold these to us. (Since we're not going through ebay's system)

Alright guys this is slowly starting to roll. I have emailed paypal to confirm the fees. I think the fees you guys must have heard about is the 2.9% fee for a SELLER when someone sends him money for a product. In our case, you're just sending me money, which I will then take to a bank and do the wire transfer.

I tried to call a CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) but apparently they still think boxing day is a holiday. I need to do this to make sure we can just cross the border for an hour or so, come back with a bunch of "USA - made" headlights, and only get taxed the 14% sales tax and nothing else...

Hopefully this goes smoothly guys.

Prices are as follows:

Headlights = $165+14%tax = $188.10 USD
Headlights + Angel Eyes (CCFLs) = $200USD + 14% tax = $228 USD
CCFL's alone = ?? not sure yet, most likely 60-80$
BULBS = $12 USD EXTRA

BUT, is everyone ok with adding on like $4USD for gas?

Should be about 300km there and back.

EDIT: BennyL, I just realized, there's no point in getting CCFL's by yourself. I'll just pretend one of the other guys that doesn't want CCFLs is getting them and then give them to you. So then they will cost you 228-188.10+4=$44.9USD with gas money :)

I did one with a fellow member on here, went perfectly. It's set up that an amount is taken out of your account, and held in limbo, with a notification sent to the recipient (yours) email. You can transfer it into YOUR account by entering in the password. Simple as pie, and all you need is online banking.

It's taking you long to work something out man.

Flav, you have to understand..with the amount of expectations various participants have, it takes a bit of work to make EVERYBODY in this group buy happy. As you told me, the $150 price increase for Depo with Predator Chromium is too much, even though it was still cheaper than Umnitza..Im trying to go adjust some things to make this work within people's budgets as well, considering my really fair pricing was a bit too much for some people before.

If you or any participants can't wait, the retail price is more than welcoming you.

I should have confirmation from my supplier today, so I should be able to post the figures later on. To give you guys a *ballpark* range of what you can expect to pay, you can reference to my initial prices posted:

Depo Gen IV w/pnp- $235USD~$260CDN shipped/duty/taxes incl.

Depo Gen IV w/pnp/Predator Chromium **PRE-INSTALLED** - $395USD~$450CDN shipped/duty/taxes incl.

I am going to see what I can do as far as the second option goes. Ill keep you posted. Who right now would be interested in that ballpark range? The sooner you post, the sooner this all happens..once the list of 10 is made up we can make a payment meeting.

Boots R

That's still cheaper than what I paid Umnitza for my Gen 4 Depos with Predator Chromiums.

Bump for Jon. Hopefully everything works out in this thread.

Dr. Flyview

Ebay guy replies...

Yes, we are still here. Please understand last couple weeks was pretty busy then there were 2 holidays. Like the last time, we can put Made in USA sticker over the boxes, but it's kinda obvious that we are trying to cover something up. I personally think it's better to put stickers that says "Assembled in USA". Let me know. What's the address you want us to ship these headlights to. I think we will use Fedex or UPS like the last time, let me know when you guys are ready. Just a reminder, money order or wire transfer only there is no conspiracy this is so paypal does not take a chunk out of the payment. Thanks and happy new year.

Best Regards

Flav, your almost right but Umnitza doesn't make them..we get them specifically ordered for better fitment with predator chromiums, and a higher quality ellipsoid for better aiming and cut off when combined with HID.

I'll check back on this thread to see everyone's thoughts, if everyone is in favour of my group buy I will post a seperate thread to minimize confusion and to keep the board a bit cleaner. :)

As another option, I can have each package sent to the buyer's address. I can have this done, with a lower price *maybe* right at $400cdn (just for you flav ;) ) but then shipping it to the individual's address will leave the duty bill to the buyer.

Let me know whats easier for you guys, the sooner you give me feedback the sooner this happens.

Is that really worth it? AE's go for about $80-90 on ebay plus shipping.

dbworld4k
01-05-2007, 12:48 AM
It's your best bet, and they should be about 80 or 90 shipped. Check the seller redcometm3 on eBay. At least this way you have newer looking headlights that will take years off your car. More importantly, this way everyone can get the headlights regardless of people wanting AE's and getting in the way of the GB going through. So, if you guys want Ae's later you can get them by your own means.

I think the emphasis should be more on the headlights for now, and that's the best way to get them to all of you the fastest and guaranteed way. I'd pay an extra 20-30 bucks for the saftey and security of a local seller.

True, but it seems that people don't want to pay the extra for the Predator Chromiums and still want the eBay CCFLs, despite the eBay GB loosing hope, fast. That leaves you only one realistic choice: no AE's from any group buy (eBay or JB), and get your own AE's later - at least this way everyone gets their headlights and then its up to them to source their own AE's for prices fitting their alloted budget.

Ok guys, I seriously need more input from everyone on the vote for ebay vs. jonny.

Ebay prices:

Depo Gen IV w/pnp - $192USD (226CAD)
Depo Gen IV w/pnp with generic angel eyes - $228USD ($268CAD)

(bulbs add $12USD)

Jonny's prices:

Depo Gen IV w/pnp- $235USD (278CAD)
Depo Gen IV w/pnp/Predator Chromium **PRE-INSTALLED** - $395USD ($465CAD) [maybe $340USD or 400CAD]

shipped/duty/taxes incl. for ebay and Jonny's prices.

Although jonny's prices are higher, I've been reading about this redcometm3 ebay seller and a lot of people are saying at least the AEs are pretty bad. Many have problems getting them to light up in the first place, and some break down later, or don't work in the cold.
From what I read on bf.c, and from personal email experience with this redcometm3 seller, he is very bad to deal with.
But if we're gonna get this going we need to quickly rebuild the list so Jonny can order.

You seem to be about right for the price Jonny's offering WITHOUT angel eyes. ~235usd including shipping, but jonny's also includes no duties and he's local, don't have to worry about the shipping really. Let's see what jonny has to say about this.

But for the buy with angel eyes, if he can do it at 400 cad, ~340USD that's a much bigger saving b/c it would be about 410USD directly from umnitza without duties!

Ok guys, this is THE only way to keep the costs minimal, and most importantly make this possible. $215 USD shipped to your individual address. I am going to get them all labelled as gifts, just like Habbie. I am working on a SEPERATE group buy for predator chromium for those interested. Installation can also be arranged for the predator chromium.

Please start the list asap, as I can't guarentee a price for as long as this thread has gone on, its now or never guys. For those who do want predator chromium Preinstalled (less hassle for you) right away and dont want to wait for the seperate group buy, add $170USD to the price (no minimum order)needed).

They LOOK like zkw's but they are depos gen IVs. I think boots posted a pic a page or few pages back.

Jonny, I need to know what the price will be for the predator chromium group buy to see if I should wait or get them preinstalled. Will it be less than the 170USD, the same or more? Right now the price for the chromiums is really steep. Even with shipping habbie comes out a bit cheaper but w/e, I understand if you can't go lower and then I'll prbly just get the headdies, the price for just the depos is really good.

Your choice man, but I promise you, you will not find these this cheap. It's no longer really a hassle cause Jonny is a local provider.

I must warn you first, some guy around my neighbourhood ordered lights like these, and the Rings are complete shit, the projector has no cut off, and it isn't flush with the car at ALL.

$500bimmer knows the guy too, and can confirm how fugly the lights look.

All I can say is... Don't do it!

Getting them somewhere else doesn't mean we can't get the same one in the group buy. No need to hate on other peoples choice of what they buy man.
