I know that on the older fella's they were bad for breakin, wearin down to fast, blah blah blah, on the new BMW's are they better? Did they change the design at all? I'm trying to convince my friends father on getting a Bimmer, only he says that only if they changed their timing belt system, so, did they?

Info would be great!

Even the old ones are not that bad if you change the belt when you should! One of the cars I have (85 325e) did blow the engine because of timing belt failure (before I got it) but when I took it appart I discovered it was the original one with 330+ K on it!!!

The brotha' is speakin' da truth! It doesn't matter if you drive a European, North American, or Japanese car. If you don't change the belt/chain, oil, water pump, etc. you are just asking for trouble.

I actuallly never heard about timing belt problems on BMWs
It needs to be chaged every 100,000km though

Not 100,000km! Every 80,000 to 90,000km replace belt/chain and tensioner. Also every other time is good to change the water pump.

Water pump? Hmm, mines never been changed, if those aren't changed, what are the results? How much are they?

An E30 M20 water pump is under $100 from the dealership I think. Well about 500km before I pulled my engine I replaced the belt, tensioner, and water pump for like $500 cash installed. But if you don't do all the proper maintence you could do serious damage to your engine and wallet.

Call the dealership. It shouldn't be that expensive. Those parts you want to replace with Genuine BMW Parts...trust me.

If you have ever seen an M20 engine with broken timing belt you would get it done right away and not even ask how much it costs!!! I had a car like that and when I opened the engine...oh my god!!! The valves were not only bent, but 2 or 3 of them were broken right off!!! There was heavy damage to the head and pistons...to fix that engine would have been a lot more expensive then replacing it with a used one....
