E stands for Entwicklung (German word for development)

wow... there's finally a site stating what divisions each bimmer is in the e and a number... been wondering that for awhile...

That's weird, on that site it says the Z1 falls under E30.

Maybe because of the m20.... But then there are other series models that share the same engine..... hmmm
