My e30 is a '87 325i cabrio that has never saw a winter before. It runs perfectly once started. The problem is on cold days it can take up to 6 seconds to start up. When I have been driving it for a bit, have to go into a store and come back out it will start right away when warm. During the summertime its hit or miss, I can go out in the morning and it will go right away or it will be a few seconds before it goes. I was told by my friend doug who has an old 911 that it is most likely my fuel check vavle (the valve that keeps the pressure in the fuel line when the car is off so the fuel does not drip back in the tank and cause you to have to wait for the fuel to be pumped from the back to the front of the car upon every startup) Doing some googling I could not find anything related to my issue. I am hoping that someone will see this thread that have fixed the problem before.

Thanks in advance,
Lowe

I have the same problem. I replaced the fuel injectors with design II 19 lbs injectors and the problem seems to be a little better, but still not great. My old injectors were extremely clogged. Im going to replace the fuel filter soon, and probably the check valve (which i didnt think of before i read this). If that doesnt work, maybe the fuel pump?

Welcome to E30 ownership. I haven't seen a single E30 that consistently starts up at the first touch of the key.

BTW, E30's are equipped with electric fuel pumps, so if you want to eliminate the "lack of fuel in the lines because it drained back" problem, simply turn the key to on, wait a few seconds, then crank. You will see that there is no difference if the car is driven regularily.

M50's start faster. Never owned an ETA, but I know that every M20B25 I've seen starts the same way; inconsistently.

Mine is the opposite.

When the car is cold it starts first turn of the key.

When the car is warm, after driving for a while and come back to it, then it cranks for a while before it starts.

Yes, it is called the fuel accumulator. BMW issued a service bullitien a couple years back stating that the part isn't needed anymore. I never had one on my e30 and I had the same instant or forever starts you describe.

Axxe, e30's are not wired to run the fuel pump at key on, only when cranking or engine running.

You DO NOT need a BMW specific fuel accumulator, you can goto a parts store, decribe it, they will know what ti is.. and just get one that looks decent. All it is is a sprung diaphram, allmost identical to a FPR in function.

No? I thought the pump was wired to run with the key on. Doesn't matter anyway, the car always starts.

Mine behaves the same way as Trev's.

BTW E30Bim, what does your car look like?

My eta starts on the first turn on flat ground, but turns over a bit (say for 0.75 to 1.25 seconds) when its on an incline. I always assumed it was a problem with the fuel accumulator.

The 325i cab does not have any cold start valve (unless I'm wrong) so the ECU must make up the extra injection. Something has to tell it to do this, likely something like a thermo-time switch, or perhaps the coolant temp sensor (I'm sorry, I don't know the m20b25 as well as the m20b27). Perhaps one of these sensors is misleading the ECU?

Mine's like Trev's too.

Jordan, if e30's are not wired to run the fuel pump at key on, only when cranking or engine running, then what's the quiet buzzing sound from under the backseat passenger side when the key is on before cranking over?

i cant speak for all e30's, but my 85 325e and my 90 325i are both wired for the pump to start at the "on" position. if leaving the key on the on position for a bit doesent work i'd allso do what "Derek89E30" said too, eneyways good luck
