View Full Version : M42 Valve Adjustment Clearance

I've done a ton of looking around for the proper clearance when doing a valve adjustment, but have only found .02" listed once. Can anyone verify this? Other engines seem to be much smaller, which is why I want to double check this number. Thanks

Uh huh... lol.
They keep themselves adjusted pretty well, being hydrulic lifters and all.

Ok, now realize that was a stupid question. What would the ticking from the valve cover be then?

The injectors are pretty loud on M42 but you can't hear them from inside the car... if you can hear ticking from inside the car its the Hydraulic lifters.
best thing to do is check the tensioner first, but if that not the problem then it's the lifters.. I replaced all of mine - it cost a bit of coin but the car no longer sounds like a lawnmower (well atleast a fine tuned one)
HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTER - part# 11321734341 - price not from dealership $30.97

I can't hear the noise from inside, just if I have windows opena and I'm driving next to a median or something that echoes the sound back to me. I'm going to do the tensioner and see what happens, since this sounds like something I should do anyway.

BEWARE! the first couple seconds after the new tensioner is installed your car will sound horrible...then it will go away and evry thing will be okay*wave* just try not be be scareed like me :D
