Cam sensor isn't the same as a crank sensor, most likely the crank sensor is located on top of your tranny housing very close to the engine block, it normally reads off the ring gear

that's the cam position sensor, I thought you were looking for the crank sensor

well I know some cars have both & some cars don't have the crank sensor because it pretty much gets the same results, the cars ECU can figure it out, I guess our E39's only needs one

E39 have both a cam and crank sensors, the crank sensor on the 4.4 is on the bottom of the bellhousing on the transmission right side, on the 6cyl models its in the block lower left side.

most EFI cars have both a CAM and CRANK sensor... and they are not the same thing.... the crank sensor gives the ECU the engine speed signal (which is also used to firing the ignition), and the CAM sensor is for thing like sequential injection control, cyl. dependant knock sensing, etc, etc...
