VIN question

so im thinking about buying a 2001 Z3 3.0 i went to check one out, the badge ont he back says 3.0, but i get the V.I.N and turns out ont he computer the when punching in the vin it says its a 2.5L.. this sounds very fishy to me. the guy says he ordered a 3L but they gave him and he payed for a 2.5L and the records say a 2.5L but he insists it might be a 3L.. he says he didnt put the 3l badge on the back and he is the first owner.. is there anyway i can tell wut it really is?

and the car only has 24000KM on it.. almost brand new, really good condition

If it is a 3.0 Z3 then the 4th to 6th digits in the VIN will be CN5. If it is anything else, then it is not a 3.0.

they will never sell a car that doesn't match the VIN either its been engine swapped, or stolen and VIN changed.
