if you want looks and speed/performance go with an E30, a nice 325i. But if you want a newer car, instead of an E36 go with E34, you get more comfort and luxury with E34 and it performs as good as E36 with more room and looks nicer.

Is this a joke??

E36 definitly has a newer interior, E34 is very similar to the E30.
And unless he gets 540i, it won't be as quick as E36 325.

P.S. I own both.

Get an E36 but only with inline 6. You'll appreciate those two extra cylinders.

on e36's, i=4dr, is=2dr

so no, no difference in power. 4dr's pretty much weigh the same, look almost as good, have B pillars, and are cheaper on insurance.

bias much?:D

My coupe has B pillars, and there was no insurance premium difference between a 328i or 328is with the companies I got quotes for (Allstate, State Farm, TD, etc, etc, same goes for colour).

I'm going to add my 318 biased opinion here.

318's are fine (5-speed) as long as speed isn't an issue. Better weight distribution and fuel economy too. Also much cheaper in routine maintenance and parts as compared to the 6.

Also, the smaller the car, the more fun it is.

But if I was going to get a used car, the best deals are at the top of the line models.

I've had both a 318 as well as 325, both e30 though, and with all due respect to the 4 cyl, trust me and do the right thing the first time and go for a 6 cyl...it's a totally different feel on the pedal and you just can't compare the torque!

unless, i turbo/supercharge it..!!!

or even engine swap..!!!

I'm going to disagree with your opinion :P
While the 318i isn't a bad option at all, the weight distribution isn't that far off from a 6cyl (49/51 for the 4cyl vs 50/50 for the 6 cyl), fuel is a moot point as well, I've never heard of either getting much more then 700km per tank. And parts prices are identical to a 6cyl, with the exception that you need 2 less spark plugs for routine maintenence. Brakes, suspension etc, etc are identical parts.

Although if you are comparing to a 318ti, then that throws my whole arguement out the window.

It's not that they're weak, they're pretty peppy, fun to drive, and can take a beating, but it just doesn't compare to a six. Test drive some 318's and compare the feel to your e30...especially off the go, and on the highway... you'll know what i mean.*th-up*

And yes, insurance is positively correlated wiht teh # of cylinders in ur engine... lmao

so.. a supercharged 318 it is then.... hahah lol

Just get a quote for both an e36 318 and 325 of the same year before you buy.

I think what he is saying that unless he gets a 540, an e34 won't be faster then a 325.

keep in mind that if you get a 318, you can always drop a I6 motor like a 325, 328 or even a M3 :)

Nascar318is

If you are thinking of a 318 and dropping an engine in it then just get a 325, less hassle and you won't run into problems also you can get a 99 M3 for around $22,000.... Don't know what your budget is.

I have a 318is and the day I drop an engine in her, I'm selling it and getting a 325 or an M...not worth the money IMOH...So basically I'm never dropping an engine or supercharger..

Unless you want to do a bastardized swap and throw in a 7Mgte from the toyota supra turbo. Engine is roughly $700 plus all the other goodies.
