I'm meeting the seller in Kingston. It's 99 540i w 114,000km. Service records, safety, emission, summer & winter rims and tires. $22,500

What I was wondering is do you think it's better to go to MTO there and transfer the ownership right away, or maybe get the temp plates, come back, get a shop to write me that evaluation (or whatever it's called) where they can say it's worth less so I pay less tax?

Last time when I got it private I paid a car $18,000 and got that evaluation for $14,000. I ended up paying tax on $14k, no questions asked.

Here's a pic of my new car,if everything goes ok:

amazingly low k's on the 99, if you can verify kms then it should be good

He has all service records, and no problem with me takinbg the car to any mechanic. I was looking for 2000+ but I really like color combination (in & out), plus mileage is good so if everything turns out ok I'll buy it.

hope you finally found the right E39.
is it me or does the offset of the rims don't look correct? what size rim & tire is on that car

Redster

I'm not 100% sure but both summer and winter rims are BMW rims, these being low profile tires I'd assume the ones the car ib that pixture are summer rims/tires.

Just checked from one of the pics he sent me (they're all 2mb, so I can see the paint really up close), the tires are 275/35/18

If i was you, i'd get everything done tomorrow. Just kindly ask the seller to write you a bill of sale that states you paid LOWER for the vehicle...... going rate for PRE '00 540's is anywhere from 12-25

I hope that's the rear tire size you are telling me, I assume the fronts are 245/40/18

just remember that if you do get a written bill of sale for lower, if the government does find out your gonna et reemmedddddd haarrrrdddd just a fyi

Redster

I can do that but even if we make bill of sale for $15k and the UVIP says $20k I will have to pay tax for $20k. Only way around it is if a shop writes me that estimate that car is worth less and then they put a few reasons (paint, new tires etc.) That way MTO doesn't even question it.

Then again I'd be saving only a few 100s so maybe it's not worth it.

Edit: Yes 275s in the back and 245s in the front. Sounds right?

Hound

tire size sounds right, and yea i'd just stick with the normal way, less hastle and worrying on your part. imho

Quack
05-02-2006, 11:21 PM
yup, sounds about right on the tires, now get your paperwork done & come out to the meets, it's always nice to see more E39's on MAX

I think I'll just pay the tax on whatever they say and be done with that. I still have my old plates so it'll make it even easier/faster.

I hope everything goes ok tomorrow, then I'll look into those meets, you guys have been very helpful :)

Don't Pay tax on the actual sale value....Say you paid less....My family has sold and bought several cars privately and have done it for every vehicle....Not to mention everyone i talk to also does it....YOu wont get caught unless you try to give them a ridiculas amount....Understate it reasonably there wont be a hassle whatsoever..Just make sure the seller is cool with it...

Those are not BMW wheels. They are Rondell #58's, 18x8.5" front and 18x10" rear.

Jay's just pointing out that they're not OEM. Some people like buying their cars as stock as possible, if you like the rims, go for it*th-up*

When I bought my car I didn't get a bill of sale, the guy just handed me the registration (signed over to me) and gave me the keys, then later I went and showed it to them they asked how much i paid for it i said 2 (I paid 4) and since the book value is less than 2 i paid tax on 2.

I dont think it would be a bad idea to go to the ministry and change the ownership together just incase there are any leans against the vehicle.

Just an idea

Sweet car. 540 is really really nice.

Thoughts on gas guzzling !?!??!? Reason I'm asking is cause I'm considering a 740i sport but being held back on the whole fuel issue........ not that I drive a lot anyways. But have to get this concept wife-ee approved as well. And with gas costs apparently going to go through the ceiling this summer I'm kinda hesitating.............

My other 540i wasn't that bad, city was about 15-17l/100km and highway was 9-11l/100km.

Straight highway driving I average around 34Mpg.
City Driving around 26Mpg.
Not to bad for a V8.

Nice ride, however if you can find a 6speed it would be better for you.

1) more power
2) better fuel economy
3) cheaper to fix

Did you know the V8 sedans actually get better EPA numbers than an E30 325i/iS? I was scared to get one until I looked it up, they're actually not bad at all (if you don't beat on them constantly, of course).

I thoguht your only options were that you could pay tax on your bill or on the blackbook value, whichever is higher, as far as I know you haven't been able to pay tax on appraised amounts for years

Redster
05-04-2006, 08:19 PM
I paid tax on appraised amount last year, so that was ok then.

Yes I really like the rims, I'll need new tires so I went to my tire guy and he said I might want to go with 40 height instead of 35, but either works fine.

He said he sold same rims like mine to another 540 owner last week for $2800, that's rims only. So I guess I got a good deal on this car w/ both sets of rims/tires.

Who cares .................... seriously........ if you love the car I think you did fine. Don't look back and don't listen to the price crowd. Most important thing is that you're happy as a pig in snot about it.

I'm ok with the price, expecialy since I got these 18s and 16s with winter tires, so I'll be set for the winter.

97M3/4, I saw one 4 door M3 in Kitchener not too long ago, I had to check later if they ever made 4 door M3s or if someone just put M3 badge of a 318 :)

It was most likely me,,there is a silver 328i who has M front bumper and moldings, he's put M3 on his, but hasn't yet done the mirrors or rear bumper. Next time you see me, pull me over.....i love meeting fellow enthusiasts *SP*

Redster
05-05-2006, 08:01 AM
There's also a red 2 door 318 with M badges and some kind of ferrari-like rims :)
I'm pretty sure I saw you before. That day I went to check about 4 door M3s and saw that they made them, and that they even made them with auto tranny.
