I am asking this for somebody else who is wondering. What would you need to put on the m3 calipers and the discs on an e46 320i? Does it have the same spindles?

No they are different. Spindles and carriers would be needed to install these.

I believe the 330i brakes would bolt on though up front.

those work on 328 (e36) not sure if the carriers would be the same on the 320 (e46).

What advantage would there be in putting M3 brakes on a 320?

I am asking this for someone who wants to upgrade brakes on his 320i since he is getting a turbo kit, but doesn't want to pay alot of money for a BBK.

if installing the m3 brakes on the 320 also keep in mind that you won't be able to put any rims smaller than a 17" on the car because anything smaller won't clear the caliper

Bull, this gives him the right to stick on the car an "M3" badge with "equipped" written underneath.

ie;
M3
Equipped
