I know this is BMW board but since I returned my old 540 and I'm in the market for another car I'll ask what you think since you've been very helpful with my last problem :)

I'm justw aiting for the autotrader to add all new cars to their website so I cans ee what's put there and then i'll go test drive a few cars I'm interested in.

So let me know which car would you recommend, and maybe why/why not if you have a reason.

Thanks!

i refuse to say get a 540 auto because /6's are hard to find. Fly to the states to buy a car. have it imported. buy a car YOU want, not the car that's immediatly available to you. Buy a 540/6, there's a lot on autotrader.com from new york, etc

The CLK320 and 528 are underpowered in my opinion. If you want a driver car, 540 all the way!!! If you want an ultra smooth ride with some good V8 power and amazing reliability, go wit the GS400. The Audi falls in the middle with regards to driving, but it has the bonus of quattro which the other two don't have. Me personally, I put
1. 540
2. A6
3. GS400
4. 528
5. CLK320 (also this is a 2 dr so its not a fair comparison.

Another option could be an E55 :D

I want an auto, that's for sure. Another thing is that it has to be in Ontario, so I can go see it, drive it and then decide.

I guess I can bring the list down to 540i, GS 400, and A6 4.2 Quattro (I'd never get 2.8).

540i is really a drivers car, not sure how reliable I can expect it to be. GS 400 offers smooth ride with great performance (according to the specs 0 60 is 5.8, not bad), and with A6 I'm not sure how reliable it would be. I heard a lot of bad stories in regards to electrical issues.

Hey man, I voted E39 540i

My 2 top picks were the Lexus GS400 and the 540. Now, it all comes down to what you prefer. I've driven both cars. Both are amazing. As far as aesthetics go, I think the 540 is MUCH nicer. Also, I love BMW's. I mean, I also love Lexus - BMW and Lexus are my 2 favourite car companies. My mom drives a Lexus SC400 and its a ****ing amazing ride. But, I'm just a bimmer lover in the end. I'd take the 540, but the GS400 is close! Gotta love the heated stearing wheel in the E39's though.

Since you drove both cars, how would you rate performance in them? Is GS 400 close to 540i (non sport)? According to specs it should be even faster when it comes 0-60 but you never know..

I've driven both as well. In a straight line there will be next to no difference but in cornering, the bmw takes the lead due to the lexus smoother suspension. Also the lexus interior is more comforting while the BMW is more sporty. A good GS400 will be hard to find for 23 tax in I believe.

they are practically the same for power. if you want more - get the Lexus GS430. I drove that too. F-A-S-T f*cking vehicle. when it hit the market, it was the world's fastest automatic sedan.

lexus has a bit smoother ride. but not by much. very quiet car. but the 540 feels nicer and more comfortable to me. plus, E39's command respect from others!

The GS400 feels like an appliance that happens be capable of high speeds.

The 540i feels more like you're driving the damn thing.

Each has it's own personality, choose what suits you.

agreed, that is the only reason why I bought the 540 over the GS400, the handling, sure the GS400 is faster 0-60 but you can feel the bodyroll much more, I'll stick with the 540
