View Full Version : Missing compression after head gasket replacement

I replaced my head gasket on my 735il. It is the +.3mm and he head was shaved. I have the timing chain aligned correctly according to the book. The car ended up not starting. When I checked the compression it was only cranking it upto 60psi. I am open to suggestions I am kind of stuck. THanks MikeJ

This is obviously my first few posts. I cam from roadfly where it seems to be changing from a tech forum to a lowering suspension forum. I hope this site is a lot better. THanks

was it 60psi on all 6 cylinders? if the car started and ran before the head gasket change over, then for sure you have the cam timing off. thats if all 6 are that low. make sure you have them lined up on tdc top and bottom. im sure its off. if they are timed right, then you have some major problems man...

Thanks, it was in all cylinders and the comp. was the same in all the cylinders. I retarded the timing a little and now I have the compression upto 120psi. The thing is now, when the top bolt on the gear is aligned with mark on the head, the marks on the crank are about 1.5 inches off. Is there something else that could be effecting this. I thought the pressure would actually go up after having the head shaved.
Just to make sure, when properly aligning the timing,
1. dowel in the lower left corner, with the top bolt in alignment with the mark on the head for the cam position
2. have the o|t mark aligned with the mark on the block
3. align the sprocket on the top with the cam.
This should make one straight line from the top to bottom right? I will work on some pictures if this can help. THanks again for the help.

send some pics of your alingment of the cam and lower crank and i will tell you whats wrong.
