I'm looking to pick up a 2001-02 530i with about 90-100k. Is there anything I should look out for, any known issues, etc etc?

Thanks in advance.

issue #1 - the 6 cyl. under the hood.... not recommend...recommend the V8*th-up*

I know my way around the I6, I can deal with that.

Nelson, I would suggest venturing over to bf.c, there are a lot more knowledgable ppl over there with regards to the 530. I'm not too familiar with the 6's but I havent heard anything bad about them. I've also heard that the 530 is the best handling e39 by far.

Sorry I couldn't do any better haha

Well, not issues with just the 530i, but with the 2001-02 E39 chassis in general. Like suspension, brakes, interior and electrical issues, etc, etc.

here are the two links that are a good reference for e39 cars. some of them are related to the 4.4L engine but there is a fair bit or common problems listed for e39 in general.
have a look

don't bother to pay the extras for the ones with sports package, you'll end up lowering it anyways, unless 3-spoke steering wheel is a huge deal to you, and you can always shadowline by yourself.

530 don't have cooling problems like 540s, so you should be good, btu they did have a M-tech versions where you get the M5 seats and 6spd.

The car more then likely won't be lowered, it'll probably remain stock. It's for my mom to replace her E34.

ok, then get the one with sports package.

my buddy bought a 2001 530i sport last year, he hasn't had a problem yet

in 2001 consumers reports rated the e39 530i the BEST CAR THEY EVER TEST DROVE.

Does that say enough for you.

The e39 is not a problematic car in iteself, if you exclude instrument pixels going on the blink shortly after warranty.

some of the 540i developed a bad rap for stuff like rad necks bursting, etc..

If you are familiar with the workings of the Bmw I6 then go for it.

I would just recomment the usual, check service history etc...
But regardless I know you know your way around a bimmer, btw how's Bradford these days? Booming I've noticed!

Definitely stick with the I6...very strong motor, reliable, and is very reasonable on gas.
For their size, they're great handling cars due to their aluminum suspension.
