ok, i shouldnt be asking this but ive came accross a site that seems accurate with all other info/specs but its saying the euro e36 m3 3.0L engine s50 b30 has double vanos and that the american m50 b30 has single vanos..i thought they both had only single vanos until the 3.2L.. no?

No, they even had single vanos in the M50B25 (93 and onward). I think by the M50B30 you're referring to the 95 M3 engine. It has single vanos as well. even the 96-99 M3 engies (US) M52B32 have single vanos. In 99 bmw issued the M52B28TU model. This so called Technical Update (TU) added the dual vanos to the BMW lineup. After that all the M54 engines have bin dual vanos.

The euro motors (both the S50B32 and the S50B30) have dual vanos since 92.

Nope. The 3.0L euro (S50B30) is a single vanos, but it's continuously variable. The S50B32 is dual vanos.

shit, im getting conflicting input, i would like 2 believe what JAZZM said because i have a 94 euro 3.0 but single vanos on the euro 3.0 and dual vanos on the euro 3.2 seems 2 be what im finding when i research it except for one site..so i think scotch is probably right about the euros.

ScotcH, is right

Yup Scotch is right indeed.

M3 3,2 is completly running different software then the 3,0

Also by this thing its very hard to get Alpha N software on the 3,2 litre engines with carbon airbox.

Software is so hard to get right to work.

My mistake, I just looked up the information in detail:

Euro S50 B30 (3.0L) motor has single VANOS on the intake cam. It is infinitely variable (unlike the on/off VANOS on US M3s and non-M Euro engines).

The '96-'99 Euro S50 B32 (3.2L) motor - often referred to as the 'Evo' motor allthough BMW never called it that - has double VANOS. Both the intake and exhaust cams are infinitely variable.

AFAIK all the Canadian 'Euro' cars were '95 cars with the S50 B30 3.0L motor with single VANOS.

You sound like a noob :)

It is variable cam timing, sorta like vtec, but work differently (the cams are advanced based on RPM and other factors). All 93+ bmw motors have it (I think?).

so then how does a single vanos differ mechanically from a dual vanos

Single vanos - intake only
Dual - intake/exhaust

ok so heres a big question...is dual vanos far superior to single?
and is it possible 2 adapt a dual vanos unit to a car with only single vanos?
if it is possible, would the performance difference be that noticable?

VANOS does not make any power (same as VTEC does not make any power). It juist moves the power band around so the power is in a more usable range. For a race car (as an example) you spend all your time >5K rpm ... in this case VANOS will do jack shit for you (just set the cams at max advance, and go!).

As far as adapting it, you need the dual vanos head (obviously) and software. The software is the toughest part, and I have no idea if the dual vanos head will fit the 3.0L block.

ok thanx man, cool
sounds like double vanos isnt THAT much of an improvement over the continuously variable single vanos that i have so im not even gonna bother looking into if the conversion is possible..thanx 4 the input.
