so I got a new car about 2weeks ago. 97 328is :D big difference from my 94 320i auto.
everything was fine until today.
I was driving on yorkmills going about 50km when I decided to let the car Rip.
I was on 3rd gear and I pushed the accelerator down and I didn't really go anywhere very quick.
I heard the engine rev up, looked at the rpm's and after 3000rpm the thing just reved up like it wasn't in gear.
I checked the shifter and I was in gear.

so all day today I have been accellerating up and down and the same thing happens on 3rd and 4th gear. I can change gears fine but I don't know what that can be.

any ideas. help

Clutch slipping?

Is this your first 5spd?

:D

If this only happens when you shift gears, lookup "CDV Delete", then do it!

If it happens all the time, then your clutch is cooked, toast, fried, fini.

I think it is the clutch on it's way out.
After I accelerate and the rpm's go up. I let go of the accelerator and it feels as it engages again and I notice the rpm's drop also.
but it doesn't happen all the time...

how much does everything cost to fix, clutch and labour?

I just had my clutch replaced at Bavarian a few weeks ago. $360 for the clutch, $360 for the labour.

I don't know if I would recommend them though- for some reason, I liked my old clutch better.

i just got mine done at bmw and its $607.50 plus tax that includes labour and parts well mine came to a total of like $730 because they had to machine my flywheel if not that they wanted $2300 plus tax just for a new flywheel so lets hope there is nothing wrong with your flywheel

Check the dealers in your area, I've heard they have decent prices. Around $600+ range. Id pay a few bucks more to have the dealer do it.

OEM Sachs E34 M5 (3.6L) clutch kit
UUC Stage II lightweight flywheel (8.5lbs)

I have done it, and I recommend it to anyone doing a clutch swap who is performance minded.

It's identical to a normal clutch job, only the flywheel is swapped as well.

i suggest bying a clutch and having a trusted person from max doing the swap for you...that way you dont end up losing a lot of money to the dealership (obvisouly the person wont do it for free unless there REALLY generous, but pretty sure they wont charge as much as the dealers)...

I called the stealership and they are charging me 887. taxes in (parts, labour)
I went to see charlie and he is quoted me 650 (parts, labour)
$50 extra for a sachs racing clutch.
I think that doesn't sound too bad. what do you guys think. can I get it done for less somewhere else.

Just let Charlie take care of it. At least you'll know it'll be done right.

you guys are right. I am going to take it to charlie.

but I have one more question. Before I bought this car 2weeks ago. I took the car to lakeside motors to have them look at it.
They where my deciding fator on wether I would get the car, after all I am not a car specialist. Anyways they gave me the green light and I bought the car. (they told me nothing was wrong with the car, bushings where ok, clutch was ok, breaks everything)

and now 2weeks later I take the car to charlie and I need a new clutch and rear trailling arms.

I am really pissed off. because I would not have bought the car for the price I did or not purchased the vehicle at all. if they told me what was wrong with the car. they even charged me $90 to have it sit there.

what do you guys think I can do about this.
*uzi* should I go tell them off, or try to get my money back...
I don't know my anger has to come out on someone.

thanks

If you bought the car private, I don't know if there is a whole lot you can do, but then again this is North America, so a lot of things can go through the court systems :P

MSN me, i got my money back from T&C BMW by writing a very well written letter. I'll give you a copy of the letter and they'll likely place a credit on your account, which they can apply to having the clutch done,

*sad* My car passed QC inspection, except for a tail light & the turn blinker in the cluster. So i had to yank & replace that.

week later my rusted muffler splits in two, I develop a shimy at speeds
well after i replaced the tie rods, cntrl arm bushings, b joints, rotors & pads
my car felt much safer :D

Hey, don't take this the wrong way, but maybe since you learned how to drive stick on this car, you could have toasted the clutch yourself. As for getting back at the shop, unless you asked for a full inspection including the clutch, you can't complain. A burnt clutch is not part of safety. Now if your pissed at your mechanic for not checking, thats a whole different story, but its not his fault if you didn't ask him to check. My buddy bought a VR in woodbridge and didn't know how to drive stick. By the time he got downtown the clutch was toast! Again, don't take it the wrong way
