I'm looking at a 1991 535, thats needs a headgasket replaced. How much would a shop charge for something like this?
Or is it something I could do myself with the shop manual? Shouldnt be that hard to remove the head.

, not only the gasket replacement.
This job can be done even in driveway, the only special tool you will need is a torque wrench. Do not forget to read about how to properly tighten the bolts and when removing the head untight them in the reverse order!
Why is the headgasket being replaced? Overheated engine?
If so, you may be in for plaining the head also and thats not something you can do in your driveway...
A friend of mine once thought he could change his clutch in his driveway, long story short, cost him 2x as much to have car towed to mechanic and done right there.

Worst case senario $5,000
Best case senario $1,600

i believe my mechanic would do something like just a gasket for 1200 to 1600, depending on little extras that might be needed. However, a car that old would probably need a valve job, so you should look at around $2000 if nothing major is wrong with it, such a heavy overheating that warps or cracked the head.

All the quotes above seem a little steep. We at RMP MOTORS would do the job for less. I am a licenced mecanic and an EX BMW dealer certified and factory trained tech.
