How fast is a IS350 btw? I know the E90 330 got a good 255hp.

well 50 hp differencne im not surprised but then again it looks like some kind of lexus event so driver of BMW might be tweaked ...

if you look at the launch, the 330i looked like he hit the brakes instead of the gas...

another thing is that both cars are probably automatic.
If the 330i were manual, it would be a different story *th-up*

IMO you can't tell anything from a video like this... you don't know how good each driver is... and who knows maybe the guy in the BMW didn't want to take out the Lexus in the turns...

A real test would be giving both cars to Tiff, and then super imposing them on a track like they do on 5th gear :D

for all we know, the driver of the 330i could be blind...

i agree a video like this doesn't say much.
i don't think that the should be comparing a 3.5 to a 3.0. its like comparing my 2.5 to a 2.0 neon. power difference will of course be more. if they showed the 325 and a is250 then it would be more fair.

That video is almost as stupid at the guy doing the commentating in it.

First, both cars are unevenly matched. The IS350 has 307 HP.

Second, that was a stupid way to test out the cars, what, one sprint and a loop? wtf,

Put up an e46 M3, add three people in the car to even out the 26 HP advantage, put both cars on a real race track, and then well see what that hick moron has to say.

IMO

BTW, did anyone get a chance to read some of the comments that were posted on that link? some funny stuff there,

first of all its not about just horsepower.....the engineering behind BMW is far superior and like everyone is saying....i could of beat the BMW with roller blades..the person clearly wasn't pushing it....my buddy has an Altima with 260 horse with mods brought it upto 310....we raced a 330i and lost....so **** that video...doesn't prove shit

very true, i drove the new IS250 AWD and man it is a sweet car, might look into it when the TL goes, which may be soon. but i'd have to say aftter watching that video 2ce, the thing was staged at least at the start, the IS launched way a head of the 330 and so it was just down hill from there. the 330 could have been a manual, maybe that's why the guy couldn't drive lol, the IS350 is available with only a 6spd auto with paddle shift, they are going to bring a 6spd manual but only for the RWD version of the IS250. sad if you ask me cause that 350 with a 6spd man would be SWEET!!

These two cars (330i and IS350) are very comparable and can be compared! If you had $50,000 - $55,000 to spend, both these cars should be on the list. The IS350 does seem faster (Lexus says under 6 seconds to 100KM/h). The IS250 and the BMW 325i are in the same price range, and should be considered together.

You can't even bring the M3 into this equation. It's a different car, for a different need and you can probably get two IS250 or 325i for the same price. Also, Lexus might bring out a IS460 or something like that. Statements like the above are made (3.5, 3.0), yet in the same breath, a BMW 540i with its V8 is compared to a 350z with a V6; an RSX Type S with its 2L 4Cycl is compared to 328is with it's Inline 6.

I find the video suspect as well, but the IS350 is probably faster that the e90. Having an automatic for the test in both cars actually is wiser; it makes things more constant and slightly less dependant on the driver.

I've driven an e90 325i with the sports package (manual) recently and what an amazing driving car. The e46 is pretty good, but the e90 is better. On the other hand, the Lexus probably won't drive like the e90, but it's more reliable, proven build quality, great technology, and a very competent car. Itís also faster. As you see the comments in the ďNeed for SpeedĒ section, drag racing is still a major part of buying a 330i M Sport, or 540i 6spd. I suspect the IS350 will do quite well in that department, while still providing reasonable handling (itís not a Buick).

The IS350 manual (in the Spring) is on my next car list along with the e90 (depends on the reliability/problems over the next few months). This is my second BMW thatís given constant problems. I canít wait to evaluate the IS350 for myself! But, I find it hard to get rid of my e46 as well; I love the drive of it. :) Thatís how BMW sucks you in. :)

I hope you're joking. A 260hp altima runs mid 14's stock.. with an addition 50hp ontop of that i'd assume low 14's high 13's.. thus making it a definite win against a 330.

The main purpose why Lexus created the IS series is to take out BMW's 3 series. They are also in the same class and price range- heck same # of cylinders, doors, and FR drivetrain. so- yes they are definitely direct competition with each other- dispite the HP ratings.

But if you REALLY wanted to drag race, you would buy a shit SRT-4 and call it a day- but think about it- if that video came to a drivers race- that means the cars are pretty well matched to each other. Which you can't say for the old IS where you would have to put the good driver in the Lexus and a bad driver in the E46 to watch a good race.

I think we can pretty much all agree that the e90 would probably out handle the IS350. Acceleration wise, the IS350 can hold its ground.

When I bought my e46, I test drove the old IS300 and didnít like it. Iím not liking the e90 interior and prefer the e46 interior much better. Thankful, I-Drive is an option on the 3 Series. The e90 exterior is decent, but I prefer the IS350.

Unlike some other comments, the Lexus has some really good technology in it. If the IS350 (manual, if available) handles similar to my e46, Iíd probably make the switch. I know Iíd forgo some handling characteristics over an e90, but Iíd more than make it up in a sweet engine, reliability and quality. My e46 is good friends with my local BMW technician. :) Itís going to be a difficult choice: e90 330i or IS350.

i was in the lexus dealer the other day and the person that i was talking to said that they would only have the IS250 with a 6spd manual and that the IS350 was only gonna have a auto with the paddle shifters. maybe she was wrong but i ono.

She's right.. currently the IS350 comes in only RWD and Auto. (sorry for the confusion)

What I heard is, spring 2006, there will be a RWD manual IS350. Perhaps they haven't finished testing a manual yet...... The current drivetrain is probably straight out of the Lexus GS.

My neighbour mentioned it to me, as he's holding off to trade in his 2001 325ci for an IS350. Fingers crossed, they'll eventually come out with the manual transmission for the IS350.

Well than how do you explain pinning a altima at 175km/hr against a 330 and getting spanked....
