So apparently I have to replace 2-cats, 2-O2 sensors, and 1 knock sensor.

How much should this cost me and what could be the possible reasons for this happening (especially all at once). The car is a 98 540i/6 with 64,000kms.

I understand BMW has cat warranty for 8 yrs, is this voided with engine software/exhaust or any other mods?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

i'm pretty sure software would void the warrenty. would you be able to switch it back to stock? depending on what exhaust mods are done might void the warrenty or not. mufflers and i think cat back exhaust will not void the warrenty.

That's a good one. My 540i had the cats replaced under warranty.
The new software will void the warranty.

My M3 I replaced all of the sensors within 1 week. It was one problem after another.
Where are you buying your parts from?

Well my dad took the car and left it at park and fly for 5 days ( my bro stole his audi). When he came to pick it up it kept stalling out continually and then finally he got it up to 3rd gear and it started buckign and stalled out. When he got out he said it smelled like sulphur. Then the flatbed came lol
This is all I have to go on right now, as I'm still at school. Of course this crap isn;t covered under my aftermarket extended warranty so now I need to make soem calls before it goes to maranello.

The car was actually running pretty well before it went to park and fly.

Darko- I havent bought any parts yet, any suggestions?

it sounds like clogged cats to me, that's exactly what happened to my car, I couldn't floor it, if I did it would stall, couldn't get the beast pass 170km/h without stalling, just replace the cats & you'll be fine, the O2 sensors might actually be ok, but if they are replacing them for free then go ahead

when the cats clogs up the car starts to misfire a lot causing fault codes in the knock sensor, it's probally ok, just another cash grab maybe, I see these problems a lot on MB's

Whoa - so why all those parts? No mechanic has looked at it yet? I have an OBDII scanner in case you want to check codes - CEL is on right?

Hey - how much for the spacers?

Well I hear there might be a recall on the o2 sensors, but I'm still looking into it to see if it affects my car.

EDIT:Tecbo motors in markham (16th and woodbine) has looked at it and this is what they told me needs to be replaced. They are the authorized repair centre for my aftermarket warranty.

Alex- which ones were you looking at in particular? Pm me

I was wondering, usually knock sensor hold up very well even if it detects lots of soundwave from the knocks. Glad I saved up some $$$ for the new car for replacing parts.

well you don't need huge amounts of $$$, when I replaced my cats I got aftermarket ones from Brullen, they were like $150 each, they have larger inlet/outlet than the stock ones, anyways if anything breaks & needs to be replace, just upgrade it instead of just fixing it

if your going OEM than its bad O2 sensors are $165 each list price and the cats and knock sensors show no price!

For Bosch parts call your local Bosch dealer. If you don't know who is your local dealer call this number.

http://international.bosch.com/av/en/html/index.asp?country=ca&lang=en

Telephone (905) 826-6060

They will give you a number to the closest dealer.

They probably won't have the parts in stock and they will have no clue what you are talking about.
Give them the Bosch part number you will save at least 50%. The part is the same one that you will receive from BMW Dealership.

UPDATE:I messed up and it is NOT the knock sensor but rather the MASS FLOW SENSOR. Not exactly to sure what this is. ANy help would be appreciated. Also the O2 sensors I need are the REAR sensors. Not sure if this changes anything.

Thanks guys for your help, any further input/comments/thoughts would be appreciated *th-up*

hmmmmmmm now you got me thinking
I got the same problem as you are

Check Engine light on due to Mass Airflow sensor and 02 sensors on the cats.
Maybe my problem is in the cats too????

My car doesnt stall though, just sputtering.

Mass airflow sensor is the thing after the filter, see there is a plug connected to it
<img src="http://www.kindel.com/bmw/540i%20Sport%20Motor%205.jpg">

If you go to the dealer, you'll get raped.

O2 sensor about 300 list each
Air flow sensor about 800
Cats, about 1500

Could be even more for 540

my car did the same thing and it turned out to be MAF sensor..only cost me $300 for my 540..???

UPDATE 2: Unplugged the MAF and the car drives now so I know the MAF is gone for sure and will need to be replaced. The car ill most likely go to the dealer next week to see if they will replace the cats under warranty. If I am really lucky there might even be a recall on the O2 sensors as well. If I amnot so lucky I will most likely be looking for after market parts. What cats woudl you guys suggest and how much are they? Also are O2 sensors only available from the dealer? Or are they available from a "Pepboys equivalent" like they are in the states? I was told you can get the O2 sensors for liek $60 bucks a piece in the states.
any help appreciated

Thanks again guys for the help

You can buy brand new Bosch parts from a Bosch authorized dealer at almost 1/2 the price of a new one from the dealer.

----------------------------------UPDATE-----------------------

Took my car to another authorized repair centre of my extended warranty and it turns out my MAF just had to be cleaned. So they cleaned it and apparently the car runs perfectly( we'll have to wait and see). Possible causes could be bad gas??? It was low on gas so it could have picked up some crap from the bottom of the tank, or less likely but still possible is that some1 put some crap in the tank while it was sitting at park and fly.

Tecbo Motors on 16th btwn 404 and Woodbine are crooks, their initial diagnosis was nothing more than a cash grabbing scheme. Just a head sup for any1 thinking of going there.

Crossing my fingers that is all it was.

Thanks for every1's help in the matter, esp Mark D, who went out of his way to help in any way he could *th-up*

Hey Paul,

Only air passes through the MAF, not fuel. So bad gas is out of the question. What did they use to clean it?

Paul540/m3
11-16-2005, 12:06 AM
Yea I realize that but the tech said that it may be a combination of the 2 which caused the car to fail.
