The VANOS system is based on an adjustment mechanism that can modify the position of the intake camshaft versus the crankshaft. Double-VANOS adds an adjustment of the intake and outlet camshafts.... (variable cam timing). It was offered in the '93 and the double VANOS came in the Euro 3.2L M3 ('96+) and all M54 motors.

german version of vtec...and more complicated! works better cuz its always running, as the vtec motors only use vtec from a certain rpm range..and only activated at a certain temperature, u wudnt wanna use a lot more aggressive camshaft profiles when the engine is cold!

NO, NO, NO!!!*no-no*
It's not even close to VTEC. BMW's VANOS changes the cam timing (rotates the cam to advance or retard timing). Vtech used totally different cam lobes at a specific RPM (oil pressure changes it - not the ECU like BMW). The brand new 1.7L Honda motors in the new 2002 cars have VTEC-i. The "i" is similar to VANOS were it adjusts the cam timing.

a very very simple explanation i got from a BMW sales guy is that VANOS increases Performance by about 10% while decresing consumption by about 10%.
But Randy is very right!
