3 decades after its debut, BMW 3 is the one to catch

It's the target of every new or revamped entry into the compact luxury car segment, but nothing has caught up with the BMW 3 series.

Nearly six months into sales of the fifth-generation 3 series, BMW is again blasting the doors off the competition.

The 3 series outsold its competition in the United States in September, moving 8,693 units, most of which were the new version. Its nearest competitors were the Acura TL, with 6,228 units sold; Infiniti G35, with 5,472 units; and Mercedes-Benz C class, with 5,050 units.

yay for the civic of the bmw world.
exterior is still ugly as sin. but driving pleasure, it's incredible.
9000 vehicles across the U.S. in one month doesn't seem like a whole lot though... imagine numbers once the coupe, and droptop are introduced.

I agree with you Justin, still can't get use to the rear end of E90, yuck

Soldo, most of these new european cars all have cheap ass plastic interior, so it's not the worst

My view may be tainted but I like the looks of the E90. Clean, modern, not overdone, maybe a little too reserved. The interior is a very stark, typical BMW, no matter what trim you choose. If you can see one in person with the Lemon interior it is really nice if paired with black.

Hey to each his own. There are people on this board who still think the 30/36/46 chassis is king and the rest are crap. I loved my M Roadster, hate the Z4, even though the Z4 drove much better.

If you can, drive an E90 after driving any E46 short of an M3. Then you will see what I mean.

Its not the cheap plastic that bugs me, but its the interior ergonomics, seems like they've gone somewhat downhill, The 3er used to have a cockpit feel, the radio and all the climate and things angled towards the driver. But the E90 radio and all that is centered, not my cup of tea at all!

i have driven a 325i on two seperate ocasions now and really like it, although the stock 205 or 225 tires need to be better for a car like this, not only are they run-flats which i absolutly hate with a passion but the make the car handle quite poorly when the pavement is uneven or if the weather is not nice out. even in normal "BMW" cornering the car has a fairly pronounced tendancy to understeer with DSC off even and when the rear end goes out i found it REALLY goes out. all in all the engine is quite nice, very nice engine noise on the interior without being loud or obnoxious, the ergonomics i found to be quite good although with myself being tall i found the normal seats uncomfertable on a longer drive, need the sports or comfort seat really. also, the fact that even with the premium pkg the thing still doesn't have leather, which always puzzles me because you would think that for the price that you are paying for the car, that compared to others of the same price and group as the 325 that have leather that of course the BMW would have it, in fact i would think it might be backwards to that but o well guess thats marketing. the sterio i found was too low for ease of use when driving if you have to do something that is not on the steering wheel and to change settings especially on the Logic 7 you really cant do it while driving safely, you need to get it done before you take off. the climate controlls are too low as well. otherwise a nice car and im sure the 330 adresses some of these issues. i would say to anyone getting a E90 what ever trim go with the navi cause not only is it very helpfull when you travel and just for fun too but when you get navi you get idrive and that helps to de-clutter the dash and is a heck of a lot easier to change various settings when driving once you take a few minutes to tinker and figure it all out, just cause the screen is facing you and once you know the actions to do certain things you really dont even need to look at the screen at all unless something is wrong. get's my *th-up* *th-up*

I agree, IS350 is faster than E90, but I read some comparison tests and E90 just narrowly edged out IS350 for top place.

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=15&article_id=9993

if it were just a test for straight line speed, IS would take it.

E90 out handled IS.

Pretty sure the I's always outsold the coupes & ragtops unit wise. hence why their the first ones they try to get to us in North America.
Havn't seen a ragtop or coupe but hate the new I's and wish they would give us the compact back.
Can't argue the BMW feel/smell/balence/attitude that it still has, very curios about the new M3.

I'm just not a fan of the new e90 (at least the 4 door). I've driven it and no problems from that perspective, but the look just doesn't do it for me.

I hope the cab/coupe is a bit more aggressive looking...

Ok seriously, any more aggressive, and the car will start to scare away lil children.. (although that would be really cool)

According to Motor Trend, it runs 14sec flat.
Kinda shitty if you ask me for a 307hp car
240hp M3 runs that

I love new E90 it looks better than any other 4 door 3 series ever built I think.
I also like the way new IS looks.

Can wait til they compare them.

Of course, an M3 is a sports car! The IS is a 4door family car not a sportscar, so obvisiouly a 240hp M3 will run that...

dont compare sports cars to sport sedans.

60 hp should make more of a difference, regardless of the "type" of vehicle it is. M3 can be a sport sedans too remember?
