Anyone done this , today I visited Parkview BMW and whilst taking to the parts guy about air filters he told me some BMW owners have cut out the intake side of the air box making the duct hole larger this he claims or they do increased the suface area of the air filter thus increasing volume. I told him I was considering K&N filter swap and of course he said the the stock filter has more surface area. Any thoughts on this?

You don't need to cut anything, you can remove the baffle out of the front of the airbox.

If if the parts guy thinks that a stock air filter element has more surface area then a 6" cone, he should actually go and measure the surface area of both filters to see how wrong he is :P

Although you can't really go wrong with a stock debaffled airbox, and a K&N element, you'll still hear some roar from the engine compared to a fully baffled box.

Well, on the e36 airbox it's a completely reversible mod, the baffle clips into the airbox.

If I were you with a leased car, just remove the airbox all togther. lol j/k, don't do that.

Well, you could just remove your airbox yourself and see if the baffle in your box is clipped in like the e36's, then write up you're own DIY :P

im not very dyi inclined, not cuz im stupid :P, just ive never done one. 1) I don't know how to even open the air box 2) I don't know what a baffle is

So the baff just clips into the box thats eay , any broblem with back presure so I am told only with 318 is this a concern ? Parts sourse has the K&N for $60 without the spray cleaner which I can pickup later. Noticed someone has a cia on the site but unsure about the use of this and the fact I will be driving the car during the winter although the price is right. :)
