I just picked up my 93 318IS with 194,000km and I was wondering what oil should i use for the winter season. I was thinking of using 5W30 or 5W40 but im afraid that maybe i should use something thicker since i have high mileage. Also when should be a good time to put this oil in? Is now too early?

I think you'd be safe with either 5W30 or 5W40. Try 5W30 first, if you notice an excessive amount of oil consumption, switch to 5W40.

Also, now isn't too early at all. I know some people that run 0W30 all year round.

i'm loving this amsoil synthetic 5w40... made all my clicking noises go away (came from dino 10W30) and it's still starting fine in the cold
