hey man, the euro m5 is the one that was at the shop yesterday right? if so go with that man, it was sweet. '99 M3 to me just doesn't seem as unique as that car. and the m5 is also practical as well since she's a 4door. JMHO

euro m5 is not much different than a US m5.

IMO, 99 m3 is a smarter buy

I would rather get a 99 m3 the m5 is almost 17 years old and more then likely that car will be much more costly to maintain, plus im not into 4 door cars

Ive raced Karts since i was like 8 4-strokes all the way up to ICC 125cc shifter and trust me there not slow and i can hold my own on the track, so i have also driven both, at high speeds. I can handle both. My dad is driving it cause i cant afford the insurance right now, unless u want to spot me 8900 a year

If insurance cost is an issue, i wouldnt go with ANY ///M car...When you get a car like that you have to think of maintenance cost, repairs, gas, winter beater etc etc... If that is no consern to you, then i say M5...

Jim .E.
10-18-2005, 12:52 AM
i agree with Terry and Fil here...you cant afford $8900 for insurance...but u want a m5 or m3...insurance isnt gonna be any cheaper for them, in reality theyll be a lot more...save your money for post secondary (seeing as your only 17)

Ant118
10-18-2005, 02:29 AM
my dad will be talking care of the price of the car, and im only going to be paying $180 a month as a second driver on the M5, but the E30 M3 i was primary. Gas and repairs i can cover but its the insurence that was hurting me with everything else. Im only getting one of these cars because i made a deal with my father, if i help at this new job he's got going i get the car, so i agree and im working with till the summer.

Why would you put yourself as primary driver on that vehicle anyway??? At your age you'll get raped being primary on either car.

The M5 will be expensive on engine maintence and parts, the M3 won't be any more expensive on routine maintence then a 325/8. The only thing you'll pay a noticable amount more for are brakes, and certain suspension components, and even then it's not a big deal.

Well technically, once he gets his G2 he HAS to be primary on one of the cars, legally.

That's true, we have 3 cars and three people in our household, but I never have my 328 and my 528 on the road during the same period of time, so I never have to be primary *wiggle*

OK, guys i took the M5 and the M3 for a test drive and i dunno i think there are some upgrades on the M5 cause it handles way better than my dads 91 M5 and its faster for some reason. And the M3 it amazing too but i think im gonna go pick up the M5 more practical for me, since its a 4 door and plus my dads gettin the E60 M5 lol, and want that sound from my dads old one, gonna get that sent to Rudy's dad ASAP

Hah, I have no problem driving a 25yr old car Bimmer, and if I could, I'd drive an older one than that...and I'll remind you of something that keeps coming to mind when I walk into the local shops and see techs all bent out of shape over "newer" Bimmers.

"They don't make them like they used too!!!"
I think there must be a reason they keep saying this!

It all comes down to how you feel with the car. It sounds as though you enjoyed the M5 more anyhow, and you have the benefit of a couple of extra doors when you want to load up some friends/family for a ride or two or three!!!

Good Luck!

The only thing 'non-real-M' is the engine, the lack of the 6spd (although still a ZF) and large case diff.....the the brakes, suspension, chassis, etc, etc are identical as the euro counterpart.

Only in North America, we're the only ones who got shafted from the S50 engine (minus the few dozen we got in 94). I'll never consider the M50B30 and the M52B32 M engines, I feel bad for people who think they're really S50 and S52's.

Even though the 95 3.0L and the 95-99 3.2L engines resemble the 2.5 and 2.8L variants they are still referred to by BMW as "S50" and "S52" engines. Just check realoem.com or call any dealership regarding a remanufactured engine.

The main difference being a different camshaft and boared out/stroked bottom end. Otherwise they are identical to their lower displacement counterparts.

Only in the US ETK are they refered to as 'S' engines. Go to a dealership anywhere else in the world and they're 'M' engines

JazzM

No, they are referred to as 'US spec' S engines... they are assembled in Germany by ///M division then shipped to the US.

Well, the EU versions of the ETK I've seen in person spec it as the M50B30 and M52B32. I'm told it's the same for the Asian versions of the ETK.

And while yes it's assembled by the M division, it still doesn't hold true to be an M engine (in my opinion). No high revs, no multiple throttle bodies, hell, the 95 even have cast exhaust maniolds, wtf is that?? Most of the P/N's are identical to the 325/8 version. If you remove the ignition coil cover and cover the stamped engine code, you couldn't tell a 2.5L from the 3L M3, or the 2.8L from the 3.2L M3 engine. Now try to do that with the 'rest of the world' spec M3 engine.

M3 repairs are expensive.
Euro M5 repairs are out of reach for most people.

Call Bmw dealership and get pricing on parts for both vehicles and then compare. Clutch, waterpump, brakes, rad, shocks etc.

It doesn't matter that's it's a Euro M5. Most E34 M5 parts are the same for all years. And the consumable parts aren't all that much more expensive than any other M car.

A clutch kit with pressure plate and bearing is around $500
4 rotors is about $350
Most people remove the self-leveling shocks when they fail and install Bilsteins or Koni's

I'm sure he knows the cost of running one as his father has/had one.
