Ok, headers are in and I took it out for a spin. Wow what a difference they make. The torque is just insanely different and just comes on about 2500 RPM. Its still a bit rainy here so I didn't really push it but a very noticable difference compared to the stock ones.

A couple of issues are still outstanding. With the longer bolts the heatshield doesn't go on any more. I will need to drill it to accomodate the longer bolts. They are 5cm long compared to 3cm original. It was very painful getting the old ones out using 2 nuts then repeating this to get the new ones in.

Performance wise the throttle is so much more responsive. At first I thought I had sport mode on but then I turned it on and even more throttle response.

I will keep these ones unless they develop some kind of a problem. Combined with the eisenmann race exhaust they are very very loud at WOT. Sounding more like a screaming V8 than an inline 6.

I was driving today right after the install and at every single light that I stopped at there was a cop... LOL I counted at least 6 of them coming from the shop to the office the long way.

Nice mod Tom. I can probably imagine how loud it'll sound. I've heard the E46 M3 Club race car driving around Mosport before so you're either as loud as that setup if not close.

Beleive it or not, you can't hear a damn thing inside the car with the windows up. I rode shotgun all the way back from shannonnville and must say it sounds sweet in a raspy-racecar kind of way.

Definately going to test it out on Saturday at Shannonville ;)

There's a police station very close to my office and the car can be driven quietly. The exhaust now is actually very sensitive and responds almost instantaniusly as soon as I floor the throttle.

The best way to describe the sound is just plain "MEAN". When I'm WOT the car just screams and wants to break loose. Its absolutely amazing.

Sick! .. I want to get headers for my car .. I wonder how much louder it would be on the 330. I just got my Confronti Intake today so im putting it in on the weekend. Next is the chip for me *th-up*

I wanna hear the car .. never seen it in motion at the BBQ in the summer.

EricTsang
10-17-2005, 11:17 PM
you're getting carried away with going to shannonville. but that would be the appropriate place to try out your minor mod and go nuts without endangering the public on the 401.

have you had any intake mod? with only a header mod dont it make a car less torquey? but the high end will be definitely improve. gotta mod the intake as well.

JazzM
10-17-2005, 11:29 PM
Yes, I have an intake and MAF upgraded along with tunned software with a 9000 RPM redline. Pulleys were installed on Sunday morning as well. The car pulls considerably faster now, especially in the top end. Above 2500 there is a lot more torque and power.

Just impressions though... I'd love to get it dyno'ed sometime soon.

glenspeed

Tom any issues with the installation of these? Were the flanges completely flat to the head?

What's the issue with the longer bolts and heat shield?

I've started a discussion on the M3forum and actually have these headers at home right now. They were given to me from a buddy and I might consider installing these as well, but still unsure of them.

See link here and since you have these, it would be good for you to chime in with your experiences.

The headers are definately resulting in a nice gain. They look quite similar to the ones you posted on the other forum. I need to register there to post but otherwise when you remove your existing mainifolds you will see that the current bolts are about 30mm (3cm) long with only about 15mm sticking out. That leaves very little for the nut to go around over the flanges of the headers.

The next issue you may/may not have is the O2 sensors clearing the transmission on the shorter header. I had to shorten the O2 sensor mount by about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch at a CNC shop.

I sitll have to drill a few holes in the heat shield to get that to fit on it. Its still off as I'm admiring the headers from the engine bay.

You can go ahead and copy/paste this post if you like...

since you have the OEM headers out, can you measure the thickness of the flanges?

on the header copy I have the flanges are 8mm thick. I'm wondering how much thicker these are compared to OEM given you had the manifold stud issue.

JazzM
10-19-2005, 11:11 PM
1-2mm... very thin

T.

wow, I didn't think they could be that thin. Can you take a close up pic?

I was also thinking about the clearance issue you had with the O2, and do you think it has anything to do with the Z3 clearances versus an M3 and it wouldn't be an issue in the M3???

JazzM
10-20-2005, 10:03 AM
No, we have the same engine/transmission (6sp. from e46 M3 and S54 motor...) so that part is the same.

I don't have my camera here at the office but I have the headers. I looked again... they are about 1.5-2mm thick where the nuts go then they curve around them on the outside.

interesting. ok if you get a chance take a close up pick of the OEM flanges. I'm having a hard time picturing the curve on the outside part.

What's the problem with 168k? If your compression is good a blower will be fine. Lots of guys on BF.c have installed FI past the 100,000mile mark (161,000km)

JazzM

Yes, and they are very very thin... The bolts that go into the head are only 30mm and half of that or more goes into the head
